SynopsisWar is descending on the world, and James Asher is called to Paris. Why, his wife Lydia has no idea. But when James is found unconscious in the cemetery of the Church of St. Clare with multiple puncture-wounds in his throat and arms, there is only one person Lydia can call on for help: their old friend and adversary, the vampire Don Simon Ysidro., Simon. Something frightful has happened to Jamie. Please come . . . When James Asher is found unconscious in the cemetery of the Church of St. Clare Pieds-Nus with multiple puncture-wounds in his throat and arms, his wife, Lydia, knows of only one person to call: the vampire Don Simon Ysidro. Old friend and old adversary, he is the only one who can help Lydia protect her unconscious, fevered husband from the vampires of Paris. Why James has been attacked - and why he was called to Paris in the first place - Lydia has no idea. But she knows that she must find out, and quickly. For with James wavering between life and death, and war descending on the world, their slim chance of saving themselves from the vampires grows slimmer with each passing day . . .
I first picked up Those Who Hunt The night- honestly- because I liked the cover art. I had been reading a lot of paranormal romance writers like Kenyon, Hamilton, Harris, Rice but the stories all began to be the same. The characters faded and the plots were mere lines to link one sex scene to the next. Who would think sex became boring? It did.
Then I read TWHtN. Don Simon is a very different vampire. I don't like period pieces, nor do I like lead characters that are abysmally unaware that they are hypocrites- BUT Simon's haunting humanity and adherence to what he considers right and wrong make this a compelling series.
This story, set in Paris is full of historical tidbits and a much deeper look into the characters themselves. I read it in 2 reading and only because I had to leave for work or it would have been a marathon read.
Hambly's characters are ones you can relate to, her plots just convoluted enough to keep you guessing but not frustrated. I recommend this whole series to anyone who likes (non-gory) vampire novels.
