When an alien attack threatens the Earth's existence, giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the menace. When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Exciting and very entertaining
When I first saw this movie I knew it was going to be one of those movies you go back to watch a second and third time. For me, the amount of times I've watched this one has been forgotten. I truly can and did watch it over and over and over again. I know....but it just captivated my imagination. The music score was also pretty cool. The storyline was unique. A bit far fetched as far as plausibility goes, but that's what makes it sci-fi meets horror movie memorable. I found this movie at times to be simply lol funny. The concept of huge robots fighting monsters that came up from another dimension beneath the Pacific Ocean to destroy cities, at first, felt very much like a 'Godzilla' rip off, but there were so many other elements like the robots driven by a two man team and the pilots having to be 'drift' compatible stirred my curiosity. The Japanese element to the storyline felt a little anime at times and really let you know you were watching a piece of cinematic fiction. If you like shows like The Power Rangers, Voltron, Godzilla, then this one is a must see. Definitely worthy of 4 stars from me.
