SynopsisKen Follett is known worldwide as the master of split-second suspense, but his most beloved and bestselling book tells the magnificent tale of a twelfth-century monk driven to do the seemingly impossible: build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has ever known.Everything readers expect from Follett is here: intrigue, fast-paced action, and passionate romance. But what makes The Pillars of the Earth extraordinary is the time the twelfth century; the place feudal England; and the subject the building of a glorious cathedral. Follett has re-created the crude, flamboyant England of the Middle Ages in every detail. The vast forests, the walled towns, the castles, and the monasteries become a familiar landscape. Against this richly imagined and intricately interwoven backdrop, filled with the ravages of war and the rhythms of daily life, the master storyteller draws the reader irresistibly into the intertwined lives of his characters into their dreams, their labors, and their loves: Tom, the master builder; Aliena, the ravishingly beautiful noblewoman; Philip, the prior of Kingsbridge; Jack, the artist in stone; and Ellen, the woman of the forest who casts a terrifying curse. From humble stonemason to imperious monarch, each character is brought vividly to life. The building of the cathedral, with the almost eerie artistry of the unschooled stonemasons, is the center of the drama. Around the site of the construction, Follett weaves a story of betrayal, revenge, and love, which begins with the public hanging of an innocent man and ends with the humiliation of a king.At once a sensuous and endearing love story and an epic that shines with the fierce spirit of a passionate age, The Pillars of the Earth is without a doubt Ken Follett's masterpiece.", Ken Follett is known worldwide as the master of split-second suspense, but his most beloved and bestselling book tells the magnificent tale of a twelfth-century monk driven to do the seemingly impossible: build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has ever known. • Pillars of the Earth. I loved the hardcover because it was easier for me to read. The book is very long so the hard cover for me would last.

This book is my favorite ever. I keep buying them as gifts for others The condition of the book was excellent, but if it was just good I would be happy. Great gifts. If you like history, although its not a history book, it goes back to the knights and Masons. I hated when I was done reading it. I wanted more. Just a hint about the second book written a few years later... I totally didn't connect with anything, big disappointment.

  • Compelling epic

If you love epics, this is a compelling story with wonderful characters and well researched information on the time period. I suggest first reading the prequel which just came out at the end of last year.

  • Great Ken Follett trilogy beginning with Pillars of the Earth.

Ken Follett's trilogy including Pillars of the Earth, World Without End; and A Column of Fire are terrific. Pillars of the Earth I bought used in Hardcover. I read it originally in paperback, purchased several copies for friends. It is a world best seller. Also made Oprah's book recommended list. Awesome historical fiction. World Without End is an amazing read during the time of the Plague. I am only 200 pages into the final A Column of Fire and enjoying that read also. Will likely read them again.

  • Awesome Author of the Ages

Ken Follett writes historical fiction books that draw you into the dark ages. He colors the characters and the landscape so beautifully that I can’t put any of his books down. I have 3 more of his novels just waiting to be read.

  • Storytelling at its best

Fantastic novel, so glad I finally read it. Follett has a way of describing life and work in centuries past with fascinating detail and in such a way that makes you want more. It's one of those novels that lives with you awhile after you've finished it. I'll definitely be purchasing the other two novels in this trilogy.

  • Highly Recommended!

Ken Follett is a master storyteller, and this epic story set in the fictional town of Kingsbridge in the 15th Century will draw readers into a community of personalities that represent the good as well as the purely evil. Once you have finished it you will want to obtain the next two books in the trilogy.

  • Book in "like new" condition.

Book was described as "used" but it is in excellent condition. I purchased this for my grandson's 16th birthday as he wanted to start reading the series but we were missing the first in the series. This is one of my favorite books & I know he will love it too.

  • Pillars Under My Pillow

Great historical fiction by Ken Follett, The Pillars of the Earth makes you feel transported to that early-England era. Absorbing enough to keep you awake into the early hours and large enough maintain the rage for a couple of weeks. Line up the two sequels World without End and Column of Fire for a season of Follett entertainment.

  • A Great Historically based Tale on the Common People of England

Follett is a great storyteller and historically based fiction is what he delivers in this masterful tale. He is aware of the vital role played by the common people in building up England and forcing the monarchy to respect them and their laws.
