I used to have a Pod Pro, which was a bit easier to master, but the integration with my Variax "Standard", on this makes the learning curve well worth the effort. Also the ability to zero in on a tone you're trying to emulate, or creating something unique of your own is limited only by your imagination and your ability to hear what you have and knowing where to go from there to get what you're after. I have some great patches I've downloaded from Line 6's custom tone page and I'd recommend this to the novice, as a tool for exploring how to create a patch and what effects and signal path work best for what you are after. Like anything worth doing it requires some effort, but once you get the hang of this, I can't imagine a bigger bang for the guitar tone chaser's buck ! One worthwhile heads up.......Don't plug this into a guitar amp. Plug it directly into a powered monitor or P.A. speaker (so you get a flat full frequency response) if you feel you need a stage or practice amp. You could build your patches to compensate for the shortcomings of any guitar amp's response but why bother, when you have 20 + amp simulations and multiple speaker cabs on board ?Read full review

This thing is great! But it wasn't great until I took the time to learn to get the best sounds out of it. It's great for those of us who love to dig deep and tweak tones. If you are looking for something fast and easy, try the Firehawk. It's easier to use but has less flexability. They made a product for all kinds of guitarists. Great idea Line 6!

I love the pod 500x. With that said there is a lot to it. The instructions provided with the box are just general instruction. They recomend that you download the real manual. If i recall correctly it is over 100 pages long. There are tons of pre-sets, many of which you would never actually use in a performance setting. I read a ton of reviews before i pulled the trigger and bought mine. It seems you either love it or hate it. You hate it if you don't have the time to figure it out (or you can't figure it out). You love if you can figure it out. It is a pretty complex machine for a novice and even for the seasoned player, but you can littetally get any sound you want if you have the patience. A really great thing about it is that you can download off of the internet pre-sets that others have put together. Hope my opinion has helped.Read full review

Pod HD 500x is an upgrade for me of pod XT live. Id had that for ten years and maybe I had the focus to learn learn learnt. Right now I have teens and life is busy, however tho I haven't out the time in with pod hd500x you can make stereo rigs (one amp on ear panned ear/side of the stage thru PA or two amps) and if you put some slight milliseconds of delay on one side of that it widens the sounds completely. It is loaded with amps, like pod XT was, and effects and more effects in the case of 500x AND it has greater sound quality throughout as well as a looper - a short looper and useful extra, tho definately not a replacement for a real looper AND when you learn how, using the stereo amp setup you can set up two guitars (one needs to be a variax and one a quarter inch input, or an xl mic and guitar, or a variax and guitar AND they can have DIFFERENT rigs each, that is, different amps or preamp plus effects for each instrument. Therefore POD HD 500x is like having 2 pod XT lives AND a looper AND better sound quality and diverse output options. However, if you don't want to read manuals OR tweak much, watch videos on how to make patches and read the manual to see if you want something so complicated and deep. In my opinion it's worth the work, though I am only starting to realise what I can do, but I don't think you need to understand everything in this tool box to get value. This was cheaper new with all the extras and plus shipping than a pod XT was 12 years ago or whenever I bought it. Consider well. Amazing tool. Great value.Read full review
