  • Simple to use, with advanced options if desired

Netgear makes decent stuff for a small office or a networked home. This switch does not need a fan, and is totally silent. As with all used equipment, I recommend pushing the "reset" button first. After that, just plug your network cables in and everything gets connected. The switch operates at gigabit speeds, and automatically accommodates slower devices. There are advanced features ready if needed. There are two versions of this device. The latest version, V2, is identified on the sticker as "GS116E V2". Access to the advanced settings are as simple as connecting to any port and using a web browser. The latest firmware allows identifying each port with a text label, such as "green cable", or "printer". The previous version, without the V2 mark, lacks these features. Access to the advanced settings for the earlier version requires software which is installed on a computer connected to the switch. Netgear's web site provides manuals, software, firmware and quick start guides. Upgrading the firmware is painless. This appears to be a well designed product which will work right out of the box, or can be easily configured with several advanced features.

  • Works great, super value

I got this excellent switch for 20 odd dollars and it came promptly from the seller. I had some trouble finding a power supply and didn't want to spend $15 on a generic one. I ended up trying an old switch's power supply and it turned the power light on but the switch didn't work. I finally was able to use an old laptop charger with a spliced head to get it to power on correctly. It worked immediately and is managed so you're able to change settings via the URL printed on the back. I didn't need to change any settings though, it worked right away. Overall this is a tremendous value for a gigabit switch from a reputable company with lots of ports. I opened the walls in several rooms for a renovation so I've gone crazy wiring ports all over the place. The unit is wall mountable which is rare for a 16 port switch. Rack mount is fine, provided you have a rack but wall mount is much easier for homeowners like myself who want ample ports are using this switch to wire a home run setup with a cable modem and router. Consumer grade cable modems and routers are always desktop/wall mountable so it doesn't make sense to spend $100+ on a rack enclosure if you only intend to mount the switch. Having home run wired Ethernet is far superior to wireless options when you want a stable fast connection that doesn't need to be reset constantly or extended via ugly inelegant wall warts.

  • Gadzooks! Brilliant, just brilliant!

I am an IT professional who has a more advanced network than the typical home user. This is an ideal managed switch for that scenario. It offers VLAN capabilities and QoS, but it is still reasonably priced.

  • Find the guide!

Make sure you get the guide. Took me a while until I read that the computer used to configure the switch has to be one specific IP address! After that it's a piece of cake.
