Abusive and denigrative characters made this book virtually unreadable. Admittedly, the book predates #MeToo, but misogyny is misogyny and this book wasn't written in 1817 (though you might think so from the content.) The problem is not the writer's craft; she is a fine writer. But her male protagonist is cruel, dismissive, and - realistically speaking - unredeemable. I have read other reviews of this book that point up this same flaw, so I hardly think it is something only I noticed. Many romance fiction readers, including me, like rogues and rascals. But the romantic lead in this book is predatory and cruel, qualities Kleypas seems to legitimize in ways that make no sense at all. I can't compare the character to others in Kleypas' other novels, since - for me - this was the first and last of her books I will ever read. Read full review
