    The Original and the Best.

    This story is timeless—in fact there are many variants of the theme out there—but its strength lies in the execution and atmosphere; something the 2003 remake of the Italian Job fails to capture. In addition to portraying a clever scheme for an armoured car heist, the film parodies aspects of the English prison system and underworld, but this works because there is a grain of truth in it and it does not take itself too seriously. Likewise, not everything going according to plan enhances the storyline, especially Charlie Croker (Michael Caine) running foul of his financier Mr Bridger (Noel Coward). In general, the special effects stand up very well despite, or perhaps because of, the film being made in the '60s. It must be admitted though, that in today's computer-savvy world, their shutting down of the Turin traffic control is a bit thin, but easily overlooked. While the remake is in many ways very clever, it fails to capture the atmosphere of the original.

    Simply great fun - can't go wrong with an original. Michael Caine is unflappable no matter what strife they're in and the line "you're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off" is a classic!
