I bought these headphones and they sound great! But to be objective, I will tell you my likes and dislikes because that is what matters. Pros: - Solid build. Very well constructed - Sound quality is excellent. Very rich and well balanced. High quality audio sounds phenomenal - Comfortable cushions for your ears and a snug fit - The sound is expansive and provides a somewhat immersive experience (think surround sound only smaller) - The headphones can get loud (we'll address this in the Cons too) without distorting Cons: - They aren't the best looking headphones - The headphones are not meant for mobile use. The cable is long and thick and must go into the left and right cup - To enjoy the full potential of the headphones, an amp is REQUIRED (they will not get loud without an amp) - The snug fit sometimes caused my hair to get stuck (not an issue for people with little to no hair) - The headphones have an open back so sound bleeds through, negating from the incredible immersive experience - The headphones are lightweight for their size, but they are still slightly heavy compared to most headphones That's my honest opinion. I loved these headphones but I returned them because of the sound bleed and because they did not get loud without an amp. The sound is great, no complaints there but for people who expect to use the headphones while out and about, it's not a real viable option.Read full review

The HiFiMan HE-400s is a comfortable headphone that puts out good sound, even from a cell phone, which is a unusual thing for planar magnetic headphones like there. There is a break in period. They are not real loud with a cell phone when you first get these, but after 100 hours or so of play time they get much louder on devices with small amplifiers like cell phones. The sound staging for these headphones is amazing. You can hear different instruments coming from different directions. I would not recommend these for athletes that want to work out with head phones on. The stock ear cups will absorb sweat and affect the confront and sound quality if you work out with these. HiFiMan does sell other ear cups for these headphones that might make these better as a workout headphone. These are open back so other people around can hear what you are listening to, and fi someone speaks loudly you can hear them while wearing these headphones. So these are best for listing to music in a quiet place, these would not entirely block out the roar of city traffic, or the noises one would hear while riding planes, trains, and busses. That being said once you find your quiet room to listen to music, these headphones are truly excellent.Read full review

These are simply perfect if you like over the ear phones. Highest quality, many reviews and YouTube videos, highly recommend Z Reviews on YT. You can offer better price when available, mine came from PitBull who I highly rec. These phones are comfortable, sound amazing, especially after a break in period of say 100 hours. The only drawback is some plastic construction that may be challenged by kids, not adults. That is why mine are locked away while I am at work. BTW, for those not into audiophile, these are considered lower end pricing, not performance. "Pros" apparently like to tout 1000 dollar and higher cost phones. Don't you fall for that. There are amazing phones out there for cost that would be less than 100 dollars, try the Grado sr80e, more than enough performance for most people.

This is one of those products that impresses you before you even use it. The build quality, packing, and even instruction manual are thought out in that manner. First of all, before you even hear the sound, you will notice the comfort that this headphone has to offer. Somehow better adjustability to fit my head, takes my mind off of that right away, lending to a better experience to the sound. Now, the sound itself is different to me, just as I would expect from a differently designed product. Being planar by design, you likely can compare them to full sized speakers of the same design. The closest that I would come to other headphones would be the Sennheiser HD600 phones that have much of the same presentation, though I suspect that these have better bass presentation. I find these phones are a bit less forward than I would like, but must admit that at 60 years of age, that is more about me than the product. I would generally say that I find them to be smooth, and somehow get the detail right.Read full review

I've been looking for the "perfect" pair of headphones for a couple of years now. I really only use them for listening to vinyl at home or my Ipod in the bedroom where I have a Schitt Magni headphone amp. I had narrowed down my choice to several models, all around $300, give or take. I had never heard planar magnet headphones but I did know I liked the sound open backed headphones supply the best. I had read way too many blogs and posts on the Hifiman HE 400S. Most said they were fantastic and many said close to fantastic so I finally ordered a pair on Ebay from an "authorized dealer" , they were gently used according to the dealer. They came in and all was "as sold". This is one really good pair of headphones. There are actually some really good reviews that nailed what my hearing experience is telling me. These are the ones. I'd highly recommend them, for what I listen to.... My second favorite pair and not all that far behind are my Grado 325's. I don't think for the money, there's a better pair out there for me than the 400SRead full review
