The teleconverter works well with the Nikon 300/4 PF lens, but would not always fire, had to return it... and it didn't fit some of my other Nikon lenses. EXIF data was passed along perfectly to the 300PF, Autofocus works, it's not too heavy. However the lens facing side protrudes into the lens and as a result will not work on a number of lenses, such as the 105/2 AIS or the 105/2 AFD DC. Nikon lists compatible lenses. The aftermarket teleconverter I replaced with this Nikon extender fit all lenses. Optical quality was on par with Nikon, but EXIF data was sketchy... the 1.4x aftermarket units would provide EXIF info on some lenses, but fit all lenses by clearing the bottom of the lens. I'd give this teleconverter full stars if only considering the Nikon or aftermarket lenses it is intended for. But because it won't fit my other Nikon lenses it's extra baggage in my kit. I leave it on the 300pf all the time now though. Doesn't make it a 510, EXIF says 500. I can live with that and am very glad I bought it, now have a 500/f5.6 that autofocuses and isn't that heavy. I would recommend it to anyone looking for extra reach without losing a lot of light or autofocus or EXIF info. After using this 1.7x I may look at getting the Nikon 1.4x's. Just check compatibility, and then enjoy!Read full review

Nikon has created a highly useful professional teleconverter which has excellent optical performance on PROFESSIONAL lenses, This teleconverter can only be mounted on AF-I or AF-S lenses with a aperture of 2.8 or faster. It gives a nice boost to the 70-200 AF-S/VRII lens or similar and obviates the need to carry a longer lens which on a long shoot can be a real backsaver. You lose 1.5 stops in using this teleconverter. Another use if you have gotten used to the magnification factor with DX sensors and your lens kit is to use this TC to get it back with full frame cameras like the D3 and D700
With the 3rd versions of the Nikon teleconverters available, I was hesitant to purchase a 2nd version to use on my newer Nikon lenses. But, I figured the price was right, so why not try. Happy I made the decision to do it. No noticeable difference in focusing speed and very sharp, even to the corners, on my Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 G II lens. Worked equally as well on my Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 and Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 lenses, even though I had to give up two f-stops. I have no problem recommending this item!

Nikon quality. Makes my AF-S 70-200/4 a 120-340/6.7. Image is excellent, I shoot at 5:4 Image area all the time anyway. Converter automatically adjust the focal length and aperture in the EXIF data. Shooting with a D850 so focus still works fine with 37 focus points and 25 cross type sensors.

The Nikon Nikkor AF-S TC-17E 1.7x II AF-S teleconverter works wonderfully with my Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens. I was unable to detect any drop in sharpness(although there was an F stop drop of around 2). This lens has changed my 200mm to a 340mm. This has changed what I can capture objects that I was never able to capture before. I shoot birds, flowers and insects and this lens has improved my ability to shoot all when a macro lens is not adequate (due to distance). I highly recommend this lens and I am so happy I purchased this lens. You do need to check which lenses it will work with as I have read that there is a slight drop in sharpness with some lenses. It's worth the money as buying a 300mm lens is way out of my budget.
This is a great tool on the specific lenses that it fits, unfortunately that is not many. I use it on am AF-S 300mm f/4 lens and it's great. It does not work on my 80-200 AF-s lens. I find myself mostly just using a DX camera (D7200) for the same magnification with fewer elements. I like having these, though I seldom use them

I use to own one, but it was stolen a few years ago, so as for the quality and image quality, I knew what I was buying. But this Item was almost new. Did some extensive testing and so far I haven't found any problems with Image, AF or Metering. Works perfect. It was a well taken care item. Thanks

This lens brings my D500 200-500mm combo in good and close. There is a little sacrifice in sharpness using teleconverter versus no teleconverter, and in spite of being told that this lens won't autofocus, it actually will; but it tends to hunt. When I took a few shots of the moon, it brought it in close, and with a little editing, and a mild crop, I was able to get some nice shots of the moon. All this was handheld, but I had the VR set to sport mode. I bet this setup will perform even better on a tripod mount. The first photo is the edited version, and the second is unedited. I think this teleconverter would be great for photographing wildlife that are way too skittish to get close to using a comparative lens like this. It brought my lens out to 850mm with this 1.7 x teleconverter. That's a substantial increase in reach.Read full review

I have used the TC-17E with the Nikon 300mm f/4 AF S so far and I am extreamly pleased with the results. I use a Nikon D750 which has a very sensitive auto focus so f/8 is no problem. The lens is extremely sharp so you hardly see any image degradation except at extremely high, not normal, magnifications. And then is only minimal, still excellent. You do need to use a tripod or some sort of support for this combo in order to get the best results.
I have not tried the new 2x but I've heard the 1.7 was the best overall lens and I can say it works perfect for me. no distortion, f stop is still fine for any thing outdoors or well lit indoors. I can't tell I have it on when it comes to size and weight bu I only use it with a 70-200 vr2 nikon lens. Its a big heavy lens itself. The 1.7 is nothing compared the the large lens. with a dx camera I'm getting around 400mm.
