Winner of the Eastern Eye Alchemy Festival Award for LiteratureIn 1876 Sophia Duleep Singh was born into royalty. Her father, Maharajah Duleep Singh, was heir to the Kingdom of the Sikhs, a realm that stretched from the lush Kashmir Valley to the craggy foothills of the Khyber Pass and included the mighty cities of Lahore and Peshawar.
I found the story fascinating. Interesting on many levels. The relationship with the British royals, Sophia’s fascination with the suffragette movement and what the suffragettes went through to get the vote and yet many women today don’t even bother voting. How the Sikh royals were treated by the British Government and of course the sibling relationships, made a very interesting read.
Manages to relate the complicated, fascinating and historically significant story of this woman’s life whilst being as easy to read as any novel. Well done!
