  • Great mix of fantasy and mystery

Lord Darcy is a king's investigator in an alternate contemporary (i.e., 1960s) England and France in which the Plantagenet family still rules and magic works systematically. Mixing medieval, Victorian, and contemporary elements, the stories are fantasies that are also classic mysteries (including a locked room), inspired by Conan Doyle and John Dickson Carr as much as by L. Sprague de Camp. Most were originally published in "Analog Science Fiction," but they could have just as easily appeared in editor John Campbell's earlier magazine, "Unknown," in which fantasy had to be logically consistent. "Lord Darcy" collects all three original volumes (two collections of stories and one novel) plus two additional stories. They are great fun.
