The detail on the trains and cars is excellent and once you get it together successfully...it is fun to watch. There are two main issues I have with it though. First, in the directions it show you how to link the tracks together correctly, showing a diagram of how the contacts should not slide one under the other but rather each goes inside the other on both sides. The problem is, this WILL happen almost every time you push them together. I literally had a magnifying glass and a bright light shining down to try to prevent this from happening, but it is not easy! If you don't do this, by the way, the track connection will not be smooth and the small trains will likely derail. A rethinking of how the tracks link together is highly recommended for Bachman. Second, the couplers that attach one car to another are also a little iffy. They are EXTREMELY tiny, about a 1/8th of an inch at most. You're supposed to be able to just push them together and they link automatically, but this does not always work and tiny tools may be needed to make sure they grab. Again, Bachman might want to revisit this to make it easier and more reliable. Once they are linked it does seem to hold together fairly well though. People with little patience might get very frustrated during assembly. note: Don't do what I did at first when putting the train and cars on the track for the first time. If you try to carefully set the train or car onto the track and keep the wheels positioned correctly so that it won't derail, you will get very frustrated. Instead, use the rerailer, which is the part of the track where the power supply plugs into. Simply run the train engine or car along the track there back and forth a few times and it magically lines up the wheels correctly. You'll hear the wheels click a few times as they align with the track. It works surprisingly well. All of this being said, once you get it together it works fine and is quiet and smooth. If I had it to do over I think I would probably have chosen a scale slightly larger than 'N' scale. I chose this scale because I liked the idea that it doesn't take up my son's whole room. I bought 3 of these sets plus 1 locomotive separately and I have a warning for future buyers, that is that Bachman made two (2) different versions of this set and the ONLY (I mean ONLY) way to see the difference is that the newer version locomotive (better also) has yellow numbers while the older version has white numbers, this may not be a problem unless one wants to set up a tandem locomotive set (I have 3 back to back), the older version has a different motor and also has rubber traction tires. Other than that, I have no complaints, one other thing, the newer version has the coupler attached to the body not the truck, meaning that you can change the coupler a lot easier. One more thing, the lighting is also different between the two, only the newer version has LED lighting. I rated it ok because it is hard to see which set one is getting and learned a $150.00 lesson.Read full review

Its n scale and have to change the couplers on it that are provided. It should be ready to run. I'm a senior citizen and although is good for space, It's hard to work on the small details that should have been done before by the manufacturer.
