the challenger is way better than the king
This is a much better sounding vocal mike than the Shure 58s. Quality is similar. Time to move on

AKG D5 Mic. the new D190
If you liked the old D190, you will be happy with this new one. The cardoid pattern is nearly as tight as a D190, great for bringing bad room acoustics ( Churches and long low ceiling halls ) under control. It still has that flat bass response way down below where most dynamics fade away. It is a little larger and, being very dark coloured, generally more visually intrusive than the old silver-gold D190. For the price, a very good buy. I am using one in preference to a SM58 in a reverberant setting where I cant get closer than about 300mm to the performer's mouth. Enough said.
