Great sound on the cheap!
I purchased one of these from a big box house last year. It is wonderful. I went to get another one for my son's car and found it was discontinued. DRAT! So, I went to E-Bay and found one. The really nice thing about this particular radio is that the display setting for day is quite visible. The better part is that the automatic, or manual, your choice, night setting can be set to a very low intensity of red which helps to prevent blinding lights when driving at night. Too many people run around with dashboards and other glaring lights in their faces at night and cannot see properly as a result. This radio is able to be set up properly for night driving as all radios should be set up. (That rheostat on the dashboard is there for a very good reason! If you do not understand it then perhaps you should not drive at night. Driver's Ed courses no longer teach this stuff.) The other reason that we like it is our external music sources, Zune HDs, can plug in via the 3.5mm jack and we can listen to our preferred music and not the trash on local radio. This radio should never have been taken out of production. It is a great and affordable device and we plan to install them in several more vehicles so that we have identical controls in all of them. A lot of sound quality for the price!
I got this HU to replace a Sony CDX-GT650UI, since the Sony only has 2V RCA outputs and the JVC has 4.8V. I'm using the onboard HU amp for the speakers and just running a subwoofer amp for the bass. The difference in subwoofer loudness is considerable after re-setting the input gain on my Soundstream Angina with an SMD-DD1 Distortion Detector; obviously with 4.8V RCA outputs on this JVC, I had to set it lower. While the Sony is an older but more feature-packed unit with listening position adjustment that allows for greater sound variety and a 3D image, the sound on this JVC is clearly less compressed and more natural and the higher RCA voltage obviously allows external amplifiers to perform better and louder at lower input gain levels. My Angina with a 12" Infinity Reference has never sounded bigger and better. I wanted to mention that the display and colors are prettier to my eyes on this JVC. Also, I produce my own music so I can tell that the Sony noticeably compresses my tracks. The nuances that are supposed to sound quiet and subtle ends up being noticeable on the Sony...which is good because of noise in the car, but bad because subtleties are supposed to be just that...and they lose their meaning when they sound louder. So sound-wise, the JVC wins for me in the quality department. It does not have the potential for an impressive soundfield like the Sony, but it does not color the sound and everything sounds like I intend it to sound when recording. Oh, what I REALLY like about the Sony is that the CD slot is behind the faceplate, making the unit look high-end and also...let me repeat it: the Advanced Sound Engine with all its adjustments; it gives more choices, so the Sony wins in the variety department. The Sony impresses me more with the sound image, which sounds grin-inducingly spacious to me, while the JVC impresses me more with the sound quality itself...and its really clean but limited 3 band parametric EQ. It is a much cleaner sounding EQ than that one on the Sony, which is a 7 band EQ that is obviously graphic, not parametric. I hope this helps someone.
