  • Fix for oven that was difficult to get to stay alight

Our oven had been extremely difficult to keep alight. Holding the adjustment knob in to by pass the safety shutdown mechanism took at least 5 minutes before the flame held and more generally could only be released after the set temperature had been achieved and the flame had dropped back to temperature maintenance size. Initially replaced the thermocouple and played with its position in the flame to maximise the output voltage ca. 30mV (original unit yielded max. ca. 20mV) but to no avail. The continuity of the coil that (magnetically) holds the valve open seemed to be OK so as a last resort I replaced the thermostat/valve ie. this unit and voila problem fixed! I still don't know what was wrong in the original unit but am guessing that it's something to do with the temperature sender eg. an age related loss of fluid. Not happy with this diagnosis but others had reported similar problems so unless your thermocouple is RS I suggest replacement of this unit is likely the fix.
