Exceptional lens with character. Zeiss never lets us down. This lens is easy competition with Leitz at a fraction of Leitz price tag.

This is an artistic lens therfore this review is very subjective. I love the way the Zeiss lenses draw and this one draws beautifully. I own the 85mm f/1.4 for my canon and I was looking for something similar for my Leica. This one hit the mark. It has almost the same style (except for the depth of field) as the 85mm and is wonderful for portrait and street shooting. Being a 50mm lens the depth of field is thicker than the 85mm. Nevertheless, it takes amazing photos. The lens is soft wide open, however I shoot film and softness is not an issue. Same for the focus shift, it is not an issue in the analog world. This is a compact light lens which I use almost 90% of the time. I do own a Summicron 35mm and a Voigtlander 35mm 1.4 which I use every now and then.
Love it fully open, when it brings fantastic classic look. On f4 and more lens switches to more normal, sharp view.

This is an unbelievable sharp lens wide open, and stopped down. The best bokeh ever. Easy to use and focus. At first, I was afraid to buy it because some people adversely comment on its performance. However, I am glad I got it. It is my best 50mm lens on my Leica.
