If you are aware of (and a fan of) Bourdain's Travel Channel series "No Reservations", then this is highly recommended reading. Though this book has nothing to do with travel, he brings the same gallows humor and sardonic wit to this memoir that makes his show so appealing to those that appreciate his unique approach. I am fascinated by insiders' views of things that I am not familiar with, so I found the book to be a real page turner, even though I'm not in the food business nor a hard-core foodie. While I've read other reviews that find Bourdain to be egotistical in his first-person writing, I found many of the episodes to be very self-depricating. All in all, a darkly humorous, informative and entertaining read. I will definitely be reading more of his books.
This was chosen as a book club read and I enjoyed it very much. I think you have to be aware of Anthony Bourdain's personal style; he is a bit brash, uneven around the edges, so to speak, and this is part of the charm of the book. I had seen him on The Travel Channel and various other things so I was aware of his New York accent and strong personality-this shines through in the writing style and the various conflicts that arise in the kitchen. The book is helpful and enlightening, as well, with reasons why the buffet line is not such a good idea. I will never look at Bouillabasse the same, either! If you are expecting a smooth ride, written by the typical ghost writer, this is not the book for you but if you think Anthony Bourdain is interesting to start with, you will enjoy this guide to the underbelly of the restaurant scene and the characters that make their living there.Read full review
A montage of short stories, memories and anecdotes told with a cynical edge. Most of the book is very entertaining and sometimes informative but other parts I felt were forced or just filler. These forced or filler portions seemed unfinished or hurried, I feel the author would have liked to refine them a little. Definate must read sections include his what not to eat at resturant section and his descriptive, praising and sometimes loathsome description of his mentor.
Anthony Bourdain tells a raw and truthful story about how the restaurant industry works. He holds back nothing in his gritty and sometimes borderline offensive tale. If you can handle some harsh language and keep an open mind, what he tells you will change the way you think about your favorite eatery.
