True story and not being an Aussie I had not heard of it before. I also bought the book They Crossed a Continent written by Margaret Sommerville who died at 101 years in 2014 and who was the missionary who lead them back to the mainland . Ms Somerville was the first Australian woman to be presented with the Battle of Australia medallion, in 1991 for her part in this. They had been told by authorities to leave the children on the Island to fend for themselves.

CROKER ISLAND EXODUS is an often forgotten true story of the evacuation of a Stolen Generation children's home, and the long dangerous walk south during 1942. The bombing of Darwin was a certainty, and steps to evacuate everyone south began in earnest. Singing, sandwiches and bush tucker kept them going. 95 Aboriginal children were trapped on Croker Island, 200 kms off the Northern Territory coast. The 44 day trek on foot and truck and train was to take the group 5,000kms from home. Seventy years later the now elderly travellers/survivors look back on that journey. The reunion is heart warming, with Alice Briston, Netta Cahill, Jessie Lyons and Margaret Somerville. This is a wonderful story of courage and overcoming. The DVD came in excellent condition, well packed and speedily. Thank you so very much. Read full review
