I bought this to supplement other 18-200mm's I have. It's weather / water resistant, so I bought it for use on inclement days. As with all high-ratio 20:1 zooms, the image quality at the telephoto end isn't as good as other focal lengths. But this lens has better telephoto image quality (particularly chromatic aberration) than the Sigma 18-200mm OS and Canon 18-200mm IS lenses I have. This lens is also substantially lighter than those lenses, but at the expense of a composite plastic lens mount. The only down-side is the VC is only worth ~2 stops of image stabilization, while the Sigma offers ~4 stops.

This is a grey market lens, not from an authorized Tamron USA dealer. If you purchase this lens, be sure to get the extended warranty with it because Tamon will not cover it under their 6 year warranty. I like the lock feature that prevents the lens from creeping out when held in a downward position. Autofocus is smooth and quite. Good range from 18-200mm. Makes for a good walk around, every day lens. Not really good for macro closeups. Vibration compensation works well and gives you approx 3 stops. Works well with hand held long shots when shutter speed is up. Light weight and compact - has a good feel to it.

This really seems to be a good lens. I love the fact that for general photos I can simply take my camera and knowing I don't have to tote a 35mm lens plus have a 200mm tele lens and have the inconvenient of changing lens. This lens does it all from 18mm to 200mm makes it really nice at Grandkids ball games and school functions. The lens is a little tight when moving it to different levels but focus is easy and quick. It makes my camera a little heavy but don't mind the weight for the convenient and quality of the lens..

When it comes to reliability..it is generally accepted that the more solid the unit the better it will serve you..In this case The Tamro 18-200mm lens is a very good deal with the exception of the plastic mounting. I woud have willing paid the exra to have a metal mount as we all know that a telephoto lens when mounted on a camera exerts a lot of pressure on the connecting mount. No matter how careful we are the lens is often subjected to a few bumps along the way. Having been in the fatique analysis business for many years...you cannot beat a metal to metal contact surface for the added strength. Having stated that at the price I paid for this lens I accept its life span miight be shorter but most certainly I will pay a lot more attenton to my handling when mounted.

Look, if you're looking for Crystal clarity and rock solid build quality, this is not the lens for you. Go buy some L glass. But, if you're looking for a great walk around lens with tons of reach, it's a great buy. In other words... This lens does exactly what it's supposed to do at this price point.
