If you've never read A Little Princess, you're missing out. It has been around for decades, but it never ceases to amaze me how many people have never read it! Frances Hodgson Burnett is probably best known for her novel The Secret Garden, but I've always been a bigger fan of this one. The book is about Sara Crewe, who is living with her adoring father in India as he seeks his fortune. (Her mother died when she was very young.) Wanting Sara to get a proper education and move to a climate better for children, he finds a boarding school in England run by Miss Minchin. Little does he know that Miss Minchin is a vindictive, horrible woman who doesn't like children OR teaching (so who knows why she ever became a school headmistress, anyway). This is a riches-to-rags story, with our star pupil Sara soon becoming a pauper when her father dies and leaves her without any money. She works as a maid and teacher's assistant at the school to pay off the debts owed to Miss Minchin. (She is very much treated like an indentured servant.) Despite her bad luck, she shows glimmers of her true, imaginative self at times. In the end, most problems are resolved and Sara is wealthier than ever. A little girl's fantasy written with some complex vocabulary. It's for third grade on up, but most won't understand a lot of the language until at least fifth grade. It's a good book to read aloud and share with a daughter or friend. This story has been made into a movie, and I think the latest movie is much truer to the book than the Shirley Temple version. Shirley Temple bears no resemblance (in manner or physical appearance) to Sara Crewe, so I'm not sure why directors made this choice in the first place. If you read it and love it, don't disappoint yourself by seeing the old movie. Go for the more recent movie.Read full review

I just purchased "A Little Princess" a few days ago. This is one of my favorite childhood stories I read, growing up. It's about a little girl, who truly lives the life of a princess, and then one day her world turns upside down. This story will capture your heart and bring a smile to your face. As you see through the eyes and life of a child, you almost feel you are her. I highly recommend this book, to all the little girls who have dreams and to all the women who have ever had hope.

I mainly wanted the book for it's beautiful illustrations. It is also a nice book for children to read. A movie was made of this book starring Shirley Temple.
