Professor John Keeting is an English teacher in a very high class boy's school. Robin Williams plays Keeting. He was a graduate of the school in his youth and has always dreamed of teaching there. His plan is to inspire the boys to by bringing life and realism to poetry. He inspires the boys with costumes and impromptu acting and by making the poems come to life. He spoke to them about an old club from long ago called the Dead Poet's Society. Here, they discussed and studied both the poets and their poetry. Several of the students revive the Society. Some think it is silly, but soon it takes off and the students are really into it. Keeting is constantly running afoul of the head master who is a real stiff-shirt. His teaching style is uniquely different and doesn't comply with the rigid "never break the rules" policy of the school. He has the boys do exercises, and often teaches outside; he has them tear what he considers useless pages out of their school books. He is not just educating the boys, but they are learning how to grow up as free spirited and free thinking young men, and not just as the intimidated offspring of filthy rich parents. One young man who is inspired to act, captures the lead in a play, but his father will not give his permission. Falsifying his father's permission he goes ahead and gives a grand performance. After being humiliated and belittled by his father, when he finds that Mr. Keeting is being fired, he commits suicide. All of the other boys are made to swear that Keeting purposely led the children astray, and that everything is his fault. This is a sad movie but has a joyousness that inspires. Mr. Keeting is fired, but he is still the winner, because he has imparted knowledge and feelings, and a sense of class and style to all. His dignified exit taught all of the boys that honor is the most important thing and everyone must be free to decide their direction in life.Read full review
A sober drama where new teacher (Robin Williams) gives his American class the opportunity to enjoy English and English literature by accepting and absorbing its beauty and value by evaluating it from different perspectives outside of its often-stifling paradigm. I won't reduce any viewer's enjoyment by adding spoilers to this review. Brilliantly acted by a top cast complementing the sadly-late great Robin Williams.

Robin Williams shines in this 1989 movie about an English teacher in a prestigious boy's school in New England during the 1950s. Robin plays John Keeting, a previous graduate of the school, who has returned to give a different spin on the English course he teaches. Inspiring the boys with phrases like Carpe Diem and Captain, Oh Captain, and Gather Ye Rosebuds While Ye May, Keeting breathes new life into what would otherwise be a boring poetry course. Jumping on his desk, taking the boys for exercises on the grounds of the school, and telling them to rip out certain portions of their textbook, Keeting inspires the boys to live their lives as free men with ideas of their own. They respond with new ideas of how to date girls, to become an actor in a play, and to crawl out of their shell of inhibitions. But there are negative consequences too. You will have to view this gorgeously photographed movie to see those and to be affected by the overflowing of emotions at the end. Robin Williams proved his serious acting abilities in this movie but was not nominated for an Academy Award. In 1997, he portrayed another teacher and won Best Supporting Actor for Good Will Hunting. This movie is an inspiring one for us too. Carpe diem--Seize every day of your life as if it is the last!Read full review
Great performance by Robin Williams! The story reflects on the effects of parental influence, both good and bad, on developing young men.
