Fabulous movie
Oscar Isaac is beautiful, Justin Timberlake is a surprisingly good actor, and for any Star Wars fans one of the best scenes in the movie features Adam Driver. The characters are all very interesting, there are multiple interesting plot possibilities, the cat is ADORABLE! It is a Coen film so it takes a few viewings to fully grasp but was amazing the first time around. Moments in this movie gave me so much anxiety and took my breath away, I also genuinely cried during some of the songs. It’s not an action or romance and those crowds will not be pleased, but those who love a sad indie film will love this until they cry! This is easily in my top 10 movies. The soundtrack is in my top 5 especially with Mr. Kennedy and Hang Me Oh Hang Me. Plus John Goodman has a very interesting and slightly laughable hair/wardrobe situation going on in this film. Slow but interesting
This is 5 star for those who watch every Coen brothers character study movies, as opposed to their numerous crime epics like "Blood Simple", "Fargo", to name a few. As we fans have learned, though, this is where they can come up short. Think "The Men Who Stare At Goats" or to some degree, "Barton Fink". The movie, in typical, quirky Coen style, starts at the end then goes back to the beginning before returning to the end, where it started, to finish the story. Not actually a flashback as it is a plot device to introduce the main character, folk singer LLewyn Davis. The entire cast is flawless as we follow a week in LD's life in the 1961 folk music scene. What we learn is this is a highly talented, and deeply flawed, individual with a marginal moral compass, and perhaps the most nonredeemable personality you will likely ever meet. At almost every turn when he could do, if not the right thing, at least not be the world's most consummate jerk, he reverts to his complete self centeredness.. The movie is dry, somewhat slowly paced, and not for those looking for an exciting Coen directed outing. Even "O Brother Where Art Thou", another "musical", had action scenes. And I cannot say there is a particularly discernible plot other than just telling a story about one week in this guys life. But the music is great, the dialogue crisp and the story is compelling enough to make you want to see how this all ends up. And, as with many of their previous movies, like "Burn After Reading", it does not so much end as it just stops. Story told, now go home.
