I bought the CD to play in my car... and replace my well worn and chipped vinyl copy. I wasn't disappointed. Helped along by their support slot with Metallica in 1986, their Donnington appearence in 1987, and the release of the crushing "Among the living" the same year, Anthrax seem to have been pushed into making this album, which most reviewers dismiss as being an unnecessary stopgap. As recently as January 2012, a Metal Hammer review of all their albums noted "takes a turn for the wobbly....thrash by numbers... a poor showing" Well I'm going to reverse that. Yes I bought it on vinyl when just released, yes I may be being swayed by sentiment... and yet... Opener "Be all End all" sets the scene comfortably, but "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" brings up the social comment that this band, Nuclear Assault and so many more less successful bands, pulled off so well. The cover of Trust's "Antisocial" is a blinder and highly annoying to anyone not intro their metal; "Who Cares Wins" "Schism" and "Misery loves Company" all join the social comment list. Yes, there are tracks that don't match up to these standards, notably the single "Make Me Laugh" and its Bible basher bashing, and to be honest "Finale" misses the mark too. On the other hand, the Blue Velvet inspired "Now its Dark", show a band firmly in charge of their future and their music. It was hailed at the time in the terms I've given it now: as metal was decimated, and Joey Bellaonna left as the 90s progressed, it became ignored, then viewed as weak, trash etc. Unfair. It just doesn't have a full house of classic, breakneck brilliance like "Among..." and "Spreading the Disease" - but stood out against the Bush years, and has only been put into the shade since, by 2010s staggering opus "Worship Music". KERRANG used to quip "Buy or Die" - well, maybe not for this, but put it toward the top of the tree with PRIDE.Read full review
I recently re-purchased this cd as I have had it in cassette and LP version. In my opinion this is their classic line-up and is only outdone by their previous cd before this Among the Living. There is not a bad track on here, besides their hits and video's of Antisocial and Who Cares wins, the lesser played Now it's Dark,Make Me Laugh and my all time favorite Schism. One of the things that I've alway's loved about Anthrax is that they tackle serious subjects like homelessness(Who Cares Wins),suicide(Be All End All)but still have a comical side as well with songs like Finale,Make me laugh and 13.Frank Bello has to be one of the greatest bass players of all time and his uncle the legendary Charlie Benante-who pens most of their guitar parts is easily one of the best thrash drummers.Add to that Scott Ian and Dan Spitz on lead and rhythm guitars and Anthrax's best singer Joey Belladonna and you can see why they were one of the fathers of thrash, especially on the east coast and the inventors of the rap/metal scene. There is a reason they are one of the big four and that is they just out thrash most bands.Read full review
