NotesBrahms: Violin Sonatas Nos. 1-3, Renaud Capucon, Nicholas Angelich customer review - "It is the mixture of warmth and sadness that makes so much of Brahms's mature and late music so achingly beautiful. These recordings of the violin sonatas are taken at a slower pace than one sometimes hears. And if they do not always as a consequence unfold the drama of the pieces as readily as some other recordings in the catalogues (Perlman, Ashkenazy etc), they project their melancholy qualities more exquisitely than many other recordings I have heard without ever being indulgent. Capucon on the violin plays with a natural, clean and unforced tone and a wonderful line. Angelich, who is making himself something of a reputation in the solo piano works, brings off the difficult piano part with the right measure of depth and aplomb. Angelich and Capucon play together in a number of contexts and what you hear on this disc are two musicians who are highly attuned to one another. To my mind the first two sonatas, in G major and in A major are the finest, and they are brought off most movingly here."
