About this product

Product Information

This is not only a story of one man and his people but of the human race. A hard hitting yet beautiful film, Kanyini (which means interconnectedness in Pitjantjatjara) exposes the ins and outs of the Australian Aborigines, the world's oldest living culture, in a way that's never been seen before. Former Indigenous Person of the Year, Bob Randall, lives beside and is one of the listed traditional owners of the majestic, Uluru. Based on Bob's own personal journey and the wisdom gained from his elders, Bob tells the tale of why Indigenous people are now struggling in a modern world and what needs to be done for Indigenous people to move forward. A member of the Yankunytjatjara people, he served as the Director of the Northern Australia Legal Aid Service and established Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander centres at the Australian National University, University of Canberra and University of Wollongong. He continues to present his cultural awareness programs at schools and other institutions and in workplaces. His life-long efforts were recognised in 1999 when he was named 'Indigenous Person of the Year' at the 1999 National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Celebration (NAIDOC) awards. Bob also appeared in the documentary films Buried Country (produced by Film Australia) and Secret Country by John Pilger. Directed by Melanie Hogan, Kanyini was born out of Melanie's desire to understand and connect with Indigenous Australia. Additional crew credits include: Cinematographer - Denson Baker ACS (feature film, music videos, documentary, commercials as well as Director/DP of Award winning and Australian Top 10 music videos for such artists as Magic Dirt, The Sleepy Jackson and Jimmy Barnes); and Music Composer - David Page (Sydney Dance Company, Bangarra Dance Theatre). Kanyini is a story that is fundamental for understanding contemporary Australia, for only by knowing our past and our present can we dream of a future which includes everyone.
