The Barnhart Concise Dictionary of Etymology, Harper Collins, 1988 edition, 916 pages, double column listings is a good reference book. [bought used hardback] At the same time I bought: C.T. Onion's The Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology, Oxford Press, 1966 edition, 1025 pages. It also is a good reference book. [bought used hardback] The Barnhart dictionary is easier to work with, physically is larger thus displays larger text making for easier reading, and weighs less due to paper choice.
