Return of the Rondinax (sort of)
Inspired by the Agfa Rondinax developing tanks of the 1950s, the Lab Box allows you to load and process 120 and 135 film in daylight, doing away with the need for a changing bag or darkroom. It also features a very reliable and easy way to ensure that your films load onto the spirals correctly every time. For someone who has fiddled with and cursed Paterson spirals in the past, this latter feature is its biggest attraction. No more cursing and sweaty hands with a changing bag for me.
The Lab Box does have one outstanding feature that Agfa should have thought of. Being modular you can process 120 and 135 film in the same tank with a quick shift of modules and reels. A good step forward for the idea.
The device is well made (though not quite as well made as the Rondinax tanks) and very easy to assemble and use provided you take your time on the first few run throughs. I've had perfect results from it and I am very happy.
There may be a couple of minor downsides. I'm not sure yet how hard wearing it will be. My Rondinax tanks are 60 years old and working perfectly without a sign of wear. I have a feeling the plastic in this will not endure so long (but I'm not sure I will last another 60 years, so how big a deal is it?). While you can use a Rondinax when it's wet, the Lab Box won't tolerate this and takes a while to dry fully in warm air. You can't expect to run 20 rolls a day through a Lab Box. But it's not intended for that, I think.
All in all, this is a great way to process film and easily obtain reliable results. Highly recommended.
