  • A study in blues cliché.

First of all, Jeff Healey is an excellent guitarist. His tone, phrasing and chops are first rate. The man can really burn. His singing isn't too bad, either. He delivers his lyrics in a clear unaffected voice that that is mixed forward enough so that you can easily understand every word. There's the problem though: Healey's lyrics are so rooted in blues-rock cliché that they are almost painful to listen to. You can easily anticipate every phrase. Then, as you do this, you realize that his guitar licks suffer from the exact same issue. Heavy blues has never been the most cutting edge genre anyway, and this album does nothing more than quote the past masters. It's unfortunate that someone as obviously talented as Jeff Healey can't manage to break a even a single square centimeter of new ground. The best cut on the album is a cover of the Beatles' While my guitar gently weeps, simply because George could write clever and inventive lyrics, and hang them on more interesting chord changes. That stuff matters.

  • The Jeff Healey band cd - Hell to pay

Gone too soon. This man and his band had talent. If you listen to the CD or any of his music you'll see. I first learned of Jeff's music and the movie roadhouse. Check out the movie it's a good one too.
