About this product

Product Information

The Armored Core series represents the most comprehensive mech simulation on the PlayStation, and Armored Core: Master of Arena was designed to uphold that detail-oriented, yet quick-moving, simulation tradition. Play through a new set of missions with a new story, and build up your Armored Cores (known as ACs) to get your pound of flesh as you take the role of a young AC pilot who's sworn vengeance on a mysterious, terrorist AC, who killed your family. All that matters is catching the AC with the 9-ball emblem.

Your search for the enigmatic AC puts you straight into the Ravens' Nest, complete with the useful AC garage. You'll get orders via e-mail from your sponsor, and earn money by completing the assignments that also serve to further the storyline. The mission areas are large, polygon worlds in the underground cities of this post-apocalyptic future where clever AC design and construction demands clever piloting with equal usage of all available attacks, including energy swords, rocket launchers, shields, hand lasers, and really big energy cannons. Adding parts to your AC results in better performance and drastic changes in the appearance of the AC itself by letting you design your own AC emblems and color schemes to personalize these engines of destruction. The customization features come in handy when you take your labor of love into the arena against your friends' custom ACs to determine the best gear jockey.

Fans of the past games will instantly recognize some of the music. The garage theme, for example, is straight from Armored Core, and From Software stocks the game with all the requisite mech game sound effects. So if vengeance is a dish best served cold, Armored Core: Master of Arena allows you wait until the alloy cools, and isn't that all anyone really wants?

  • Thoughts from an old hand

All the PS1 Armored Core's have thier pros and cons and this one is no different. The Cons This one has tons of Arena battles, the only problems is you are limited to about 10 of the crappiest maps in the whole series for -every- -single- -battle-. It sucks some of the joy out what should have been the best game in the series. The giant crashed space ship sticking straight out of the ground- only link cable vs, the underground city- only link cable vs, the floating islands- only link cable, the ravine- only link cable vs. What they give you is the most boring, flattest and barren arenas to play 100 AI opponents. So learn the short-boost-circle-strafe-hop move because that is THE primary tactic in open flat arenas. Also new is you often no longer have a choice when deciding to fight in Arena match or the Mission. Soon as I was getting into a groove of one or the other the game forced me to switch. This isnt a problem once you beat the game, but I found it incredibly annoying. Neutral Level and mission design isnt quite as good as the first game, but much better than Project Phatasma. Pros More parts! Better arena AI than Project Phantasma. Lots of content! Make your own arena and give them specific AI profiles. Very challenging mech battles. Of course some of the difficulty is artificial since they limited the arena choices and often doubled your opponents boost energy, ammo, or ignored thier wieght limit. So when you are placed in an arena without cover and your opponent can out boost you, has bigger weapons and yet is still faster, there isnt a whole lot of strategy outside the build of your mech. That said, its still very fun, and the AI is AI, they always have a weekness :) Overall I prefer Project Phantasma for arena matches because I can play on all the maps. Sure the AI isnt as good, but I just make more experimental mech if im looking for a challenge. For missions I prefer the first Armored Core, this is the only one of the three that focused completely on missions and it shows. Master of Arena is sort of an odd duck. When it first came out I was very angry with it, it should have been hands down the best of the three in all respects. Since then Ive come to love it, its the last of my favorite generation of Armored Core. When boosting was fast and loose and the weapons OP. Good hunting!
