Syd Barrett's first album "Madcap" is sometimes disturbing, sometimes hilarious. It is impossible to listen to some tunes, like "Dark Globe," without thinking about Syd's personal troubles with mental illness. Specifically the lyric "Wouldn't you miss me at all," (sung in a voice that Roger Waters clearly imitated -- possibly unconsciously -- all over The Wall) foreshadows Barrett's self-inflicted seclusion of over 30 years, after his two post-Floyd albums were completed. Lyrically, this is Syd at his best. Generally darker and less playful than the follow-up "Barrett," "Madcap" does offer some very clever verse. "Golden Hair" is a wonderful, short, almost circular piece of writing. This album is also quite raw in it's production, with the Soft Machine filling in backing rolls instead of Gilmour and Wright. "If It's In You" is preceded by an amusing false start in which Syd fails to hit the difficult high-note passage at the start of the song. Truly all of these songs are wonderfully crafted, if slightly under-produced.Read full review
the artist/musician here, namely Syd Barrett is a musical genius to be exact. The way he represents himself via his music is incredibly beautiful.
