What I like best about this book is the reaction that Bartimus has when he sees that Nathaniel breaks the promise that he made to Bartimus that he would never summon him again. What I love about the book is the adventure that Bartimus and his master must go on to find the spy in their country and stop the Golem who is immune from Bartimus' magic and can destroy him as well. And they must find the stolen staff of Gladstone. What I don't like about the book is how many times it goes and tells the enemies side of the story. I bought this book because I had read a copy from the school library and wanted a copy of my own because it is so good. I own all three books in the series. Read book one, The Amulet of Samarkand, first.
I stumbled upon these books in the library with my son, and just picked them up on the advice of the librarian. The whole series is fantastically witty and incredibly addictive. Nathaniel the magician and his tormented djinni Bartemeaus are wonderful characters that you will both love and become incredibly frustrated with. This is the second installment and you learn even more about the world of magicians in Stroud's world and are kept guessing until the very last minute. This book will engage the young and old alike I recommend the series to anyone who loves to laugh, read and become totally absorbed in a book!
I loved the first book, but this one just got a little to political for me and the story line fo kitty was a cvery slow progression. About halfway through it gets to be a real page turner. it reall makes you miss Barthemuis till he comes in later. I was just a little diappointed in this book because i was expecting it to be as good as the first one. It is still good but it donsen't live up to the first one.
Very happy with this purchase

This is an excellent read, that will entertain all ages. Anyone who has read the likes of Dragon Rider, The Sea of Trolls, will love this book. Stroud does an excellent job of telling the story through each character. His unique style of telling the story from different points of view was very exciting. This trilogy is a must read for fantasy fiction lovers.
This book developed the characters from the first book and kept you wanting more. I bought it because I had the first and third books, but couldn't read the last until I got the second. I will quickly finish the third book as this got me hooked.
This was a great read.A wonderful second book in the 3 book trilogy.Full of adventure and surprise.I will most definately read again. It really carries you away in the magic while keeping you planted in reality at the same time.
I bought it for my 9 year old son who is an avid reader. This is the genre that he is interested in now. He really enjoys this author and this trilogy of books.
