About this product

Product Information

Based on the novel by Herman Wouk, this Emmy Award-winning miniseries continues the sweeping saga that began with 1983's THE WINDS OF WAR. This sequel opens one week following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and recreates the events of World War II. The actions of real historical figures, such as Adolph Hitler and Theodore Roosevelt, are intertwined with those of fictional characters who are drawn into the war. Robert Mitchum stars as Victory Henry, commander of the U.S.S. Northampton, whose family has been drawn into the conflict: sons Warren (Michael Woods) and Byron (Hart Bochner) are both in military uniform, while Byron's Jewish wife, Natalie Jastrow (Jane Seymour), is caught in war-torn Europe with their infant son. Meanwhile, the stories of Natalie's imperiled family--Dr. Aaron Jastrow (John Houseman) in Germany and Aaron Jastrow (Topol) in the Soviet Union--offer a wider perspective of the war as well as the Holocaust. Equal parts action, romance, and tragedy, WAR AND REMEMBRANCE was one of the biggest television productions of its time, with a budget of 120 million dollars and a running time of over 25 hours. This volume presents the first seven parts of the epic miniseries.

    Should be required Viewing

I am 84 years old, I lived through this series. I remember the radio and Newspapers and News at the Movies. Parts of War & Remembrance (black & White are real captured films). There is so much truth in the story line (behind the Henrys), I believe every person under the age of 60 should pick a couple of days, sit down and watch this series. It is History. some so factual (they are the black & white cuts from captured film). They will make you look away. The Henrys, show how difficult it was for some to get home. How difficult for those of us who stayed behind and how hard it was to balance war we could not see with the truth of death in the thousands. This Is NOT a movie for young children 10/12 maybe . If you did not live through it, you owe it to yourself to know something about the price paid for that flag.

Story could have been told better. Too much melodrama

The character empathy developed in :The Winds of War" is diminished by changes in the actors/actresses who played them. Jane Seymour has always left me cold. aaron Jastrow is a pompous old fool whose stubborn vanity leads them into peril. Natalie has more devotion to her blind stubborn uncle than she does to her husband and child.Polly Bergen is terrible throughout the whole thing. Robert Mitchum, although rather stiff, is fairly beleivable. Pretty good war scenes. It's amazing this whole thing could have ever happened. It repeated itself 40years later in Sarajevo and the forces are present for it to happen again today.

  • The actual story line and overall production are excellent and well worth watching.

I remember this series, and its predecessor "The Winds of War", from their original showings on TV. I ordered both from the usual sources and was happy to receive them. A word of warning, MPI (the releasing company for both series) had published warnings of a large release of counterfeit products of a similar series. It is a polished-looking copycat of the packaging but the discs are terrible with many unplayable. It turned out that this same counterfeiting happened to "War and Remembrance". I ordered 5 different times from major national online retailers and the results were the same. This is NOT a slam of the sellers, as an unsealed copy is undetectable. I was overjoyed to find this copy of an earlier release which has been excellent thus far (2/3rds viewed). No Complaints!

  • good stuff

I am actually shocked at the quality of this purchase. Cost $50.00 as opposed to $250.00 to $300.00 and more for American versions. There are no issues. The dvd's are in English. They are just as good as the American origianals. The purchase took only one week from Taiwan. I am very pleased.

  • MEMORABLE SERIES

Had already purchased Vol 8-12, so was anxious to find 1-7; not easy to get at a reasonable price. At $45 it was much less than other sellers. This series is one of the best covering WW2; an excellent history lesson coupled with a fantastic cast. Be sure to first watch WINDS OF WAR, then follow up with this. Basically same cast & starts at beginning of WW2 until Pearl Harbor.

  • Great drama and history interwoven

First of all, I have not read Herman Wouk's novels prior to watching this mini series. I did not get the opportunity to watch the original airing of the show. My first impression is that we are often overwhelmed by special effects in movies and while the network spent an enormous amount on this production, it does not contain that level of special effects that we have become accustomed to in 2020. It portrays violence, but not in the way that more recent television and movie material exploits mindless sadistic mayhem. It is a great portrayal of the war's events through the experiences of Wouk's characters. It is also, from my reading of history, very accurate. For younger people that have little or no knowledge of WWII, it is an eye opening presentation. I wish to compliment the tremendous efforts by Dan Curtis and Herman Wouk to create this series. I found it difficult to obtain this mini series and I believe the lack of availability is incredibly short sited by whoever controls the rights to the show. It should be available for DVD rental and streaming. I highly recommend this series.

  • Review

The video quality is certainly less than I expect. The first disk I play had a lot of scene stops that totally destroyed my interest in viewing this dvd. I do like War and Rememberance, but this set is of very poor quality.

  • Remembrance of great TV drama/history

I recorded this miniseries on SVHS when originally aired but tapes were lost along the way. What a great history lesson and reminder of how terrible WWII was. God bless America and all those from all over the world who suffered and gave their all. What fantastic production for television or the big screen.

  • It arrived in a timely manner.

After watching all six discs, I can say that it is as good as advertised. No problems in any sense.

  • Definitly an appropriate title for the series

This is by far one of the best series I've watched, the realistic scenes are superb- I could experience it again without a problem. Winds of War was really an appetizer to what was coming. It should have another run on Television.
