There's a steam punk feel to this and it's extremely well written and directed. Everything about this film makes it a masterpiece. Keep in mind it is in French so you have to read pretty quickly at times which kind of takes away from the movie at times. Still a wonderful movie I bought this for a friend who's been wanting to see it for a long time.

First of all, this was a film that I had wanted to see for a long time because I saw it in a video store and it was only on vhs, but I never got around to watching it until now. I think its funny that director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet used Ron Perlman in his film as he also used him in Alien Resurrection. But enough about my initial reaction, let's get to the film itself. On my first watch I couldn't sit through it all because I was so tired. It was later that I realized that this was going to be a movie in which I needed all my energy and senses to watch. It probably is a candidate for one of the most perplexing and rewarding fantasy films I have ever seen. While it borders on the sci-fi genre, I think it is one of those films that simply cross-pollinates on many different levels. Ron Perlman is amazing in this film as he takes on the role of the "big strong guy with a heart" character. Throughout the film, you greatly enjoy his interactions with the other children and especially with the main child, Miette, whom he calls little sister. The plot of the movie however is somewhat difficult to put a finger on. It is so inconceivable to describe in terms of plot or story but that is essentially what makes it such a good film. I have seen a lot of foreign films lately that almost make me wish that I was working on a project like that. The villains of the story are also a major plus because of how completely ridiculous they are but also pitiful in a way. I think that this is a movie that could be considered children's fantasy, if it weren't so hard to describe. There is just so much about the film, from the characters, to the situations, that make it seem like a children's fantasy, but a decent one that we haven't seen in a long time. While I am not completely educated in French films, this ones peeks my curiosity. This a film with memorable characters and imagery that keeps you asking questions until the very end. Another thing about this film is that it says a lot about family, homes, and the significance of having a soul. The messages presented in this movie are effective in the sense that they concern things that we take for granted so often. As far as a fantasy film is concerned, this is one of the best that I have seen in a long time.Read full review
In the "City of Lost Children," a cantankerous fairy tale full of cunning villains, unspoken heroes, tragic plots, crooked teeth and hungry babies. Not only was this movie considered bizarre, but it provided a method of understanding of an entirely different culture. Though it is dubbed over, it still is worth the watch. Who could have known Ron Perlman could pull off a french accent? This movie was definitely worth the money spent, and was definitely one of the most creative movies I have seen all year. Since I had difficulty finding a copy in the stores, the internet seemed like the best alternative to me. Now, if you are not the kind who likes to ponder about a movie, cannot take weak chemistry between characters and despise any sense of fantastic reality, than this movie is not on your radar. If you seek to know more, watch this movie. I give it a solid 87 out of 100 and four out of five stars. Bon appetit!Read full review
The movie works, no scratches on the disc. There is a scratch on the case and the dvd doesn’t have any designs. Good movie with special features involved.

An odd, yet endearing film. Subtitles are done well, and the acting is, thankfully, as quirky as the story. We just love this movie!

I have waited so long to find this movie and I finally found it. The best part is I only had to wait 5 days and then it was mine in my hands. Last time I had this movie in my hands was in 1997 lol 🤓🏳

This film is not for everyone. If you like Independent/Foreign/Art House films - why have you not seen this yet?! Looks like a dark Chagall painting with dialogue by a French Kurt Vonnegut - so surreal but strangely beautiful and believable. Ron Perlman is amazing as always and the music by Angelo Badalamenti is haunting. Do not miss this story of what happens when a mad scientist steals children's dreams so he can live forever!
Imagery was great creating a believable world
