This is, perhaps, one of Paul Simon's least known and most underrated albums(CD). This was originally written to be a Broadway Play and, indeed, did open off Broadway for a very short time. It is based on the true life story of Salvatore Agron, a Puerto Rican gang member in 1950's New York City, whose nickname was the "Capeman". The story takes place in the fifties and the music reflects that era along with a Latin feel. Sal and another gang member are sent to jail for 20 years for killing an innocent man. The story follows his life in the gang, through prison and ultimately his release after serving 20 years. It deals with redemption and social issues rarely addressed in Pop/Rock music but more than any of this, the music is just excellent. There is little not to like. He is joined vocally by a host of other vocalists from the original Broadway play such as Marc Anthony, Ednita Nazario and others. The booklet tells the entire story of Sal(The Capeman) and his gang(The Vampires) and is a thoroughly enjoyable story put to music. The subject matter might be a little adult oriented for children under the age of 13 and there are several four letter words. If you can get through some rough language, I highly recommend this CD.Read full review
Music from a Broadway play written by Paul Simon about a teenage gang murderer in 1959. Highly recommend, "Conversations with the Capeman," by Richard Jacoby to fill in the details. It's easier to appreciate the songs, mostly sung by Paul Simon himself, if you have more of the story. Book is readily available online.

Any music by Paul Simon is in my opinion wonderful! Paul is a master musician! This is a retro album that has the latin and fifties flavored music. The story that needed to be told, is about violence and misunderstanding and is very sad. The Capeman is not for everyone as there is strong language used in the lyrics. I do enjoy Paul's interpretation of this subject!
