I consider this film a definite quilty pleasure. The plot doesn't require you to pay any real attention to it, or use any large number of brain cells. This is a comic-book camp classic. In this film adaption of the comic series, Ray Wise plays Dr. Alec Holland, a scientist that is working to create a chemical that will help end world hunger in his government-sponsored lab in the Florida Everglades. When Alice Cable(Adrienne Barbeau) shows up, a plot by evil rival scientist Anton Arcane (Louis Jourdan) is discovered. After laying deadly seige to the lab, Arcane tries to force Holland to surrender his formula only to have the young scientist resist and get get caught in a chemical explosion. In flames, Holland flees into the swamps and seemingly dies. Only later is it discovered that he instead TRANSFORMED into a human/plant hybrid that the film is named for. In this new form, Holland seeks vengeance for all that Arcane has done to him. What follows is goofy, campy, fun. Note that this DVD version is the original release that was pulled, due to mislabelling. It was listed as the PG-rated version, when it was in fact the R-rated European version. This version had two new scenes that featured toplessness: 1. A scene with Barbeau bathing topless in the swamp, and 2. A later scene at a party where a mercenary pulls a dancing woman's dress open and fondles her naked breast. These scenes were complained about by mothers, and the disc was pulled from shelves. A slightly edited version was evenutally released in 2005, but it only contains the first topless scene. If you can find the ultra-rare original release, I reccomend it!Read full review
Adrienne, born in 1945, played Maude's daughter on the TV Show from 1972 - 1978. After the series ended, Barbeau was cast by her then-husband, director John Carpenter, in his 1980 horror film, The Fog. This was her first theatrical film appearance. The film was released on February 1, 1980 and was considered a film success, grossing over $21 million in the United States. This helped established Adrienne as a HoRRoR / Sci-Fi genre film star. She then appeared in a number of early 1980s horror and science fiction films, several of which have now become favorite cult classics, including Escape From New York, Creepshow, and Swamp Thing (a comic book movie based on the DC monster comic). Although Adrienne had a top selling cheesecake poster of herself in 1978, she had not posed for Playboy or other similiar mags. The Swamp Thing Movie however featured a scene of her wading through the Swamp Thing's swamp, Adrienne played the love interest of Dr. Alec Holland, who would become the Swamp Thing. This would be the first and last comic book based movie that she would star in. The comic book that this movie is based on is a lot better than the movie! Adrienne's scenes are the best scenes this movie has to offer! MichaelRead full review

I rate this movie as Excellent due to it's being so crappy that it goes all the way around the dial and back to AMAZING. I love this movie. I've had the VHS version for years, and have been reluctant to purchase the recalled original DVD due to it's high price command. I bought three from a liquidator for a movie rental place, and after watching it, I still love it. I guess the difference from this one and the re-released (non-recalled) is that this one should have been rated PG-13. More explicit but it's back in the early 1980's kind of explicit. The Wes Craven direction is great, and I suspect he directed Stephen King's "The Shining" as there are similar sound effects. The soundtrack is provided by Harry Manfredini and I have purchased this on Vinyl. The LP! A magnificent soundtrack, and as before, similar to the Jack Nicholson/Shelly Duvall "The Shining". This incarnation of Swamp Thing features Dick Durock and reeks of early 80's. I can almost feel the Michael Jackson in the air. Miami Vice. It is a different feel from the Alan Moore written comic books by DC, but is somewhere between the Toxic Avenger, and a taking-itself-seriously horror movie (Friday The 13th series?). I recommend this for nostalgia, and would love to see a MST3K version with quips from the Satellite of Love.Read full review
Finally, its nice to have the 93 minute uncut version. I have the shout factory version, but per Shout they could not get a copy of the Uncut version to release. The extended scene of Adrienne Barbeau is excellent!!! If you have this version hang onto it...this is long out of print, and everytime i check ebay the prices go up and up...Great film

I love this movie for a few reasons. The first being:Adrienne Barbeau! She is beautiful and talented and can scream like no ones business. She plays Alice Cable,a government agent sent to the florida everglades where Dr. Alec Holland(the equally brillant Ray Wise) has been working on a formula that could end world hunger.Let's just say things don't go according to plan when Arcane(Louis Jourdan)a evil arch nemesis shows up to take the formula. He kidnaps Cable and leaves Dr. Holland for dead after dousing him with chemicals from his own lab.He soon becomes "Swamp Thing".Wes Craven does an great job directing. Some of the monster suits are a little hokey but overall it is a great film! This is the version of the film released a couple years back, but recalled because of it being the european cut of the film released with added nudity and a PG rating.A great movie and a awesome collector's item!Read full review
Although newer, this movie has the look of classic sci-fi movies. Swamp monster protecting pretty girl from bad guy. Perhaps best part of this movie is Adrienne Barbeau's (pretty girl) topless swamp scene. Predictable plot and action scenes abound with hot girls-what a combination! Original cut of this movie is better than censored re-cut. Hope you enjoy this movie. Directed by Wes Craven, starring Louis Jourdan and stunning Adrienne Barbeau, this comic book come to screen, does not require a lot of brainpower and is probably best viewed with a sense of humor. Hope you enjoy it.
Exactually what i wanted!

Got it fast, product was as promised. A very under appreciated movie, It echoed the character of that time and foreshadowed were the character was going to go. A Real keeper.
One of my favorite movies ever! You have to maintain a sense of humor to really enjoy it! I've been a collector of Swamp Thing memoribilia for several years and had not been able to obtain a copy of this particular edition of the movie because it was removed from the shelves when a customer complained that it was improperly rated PG instead of R to restrict viewing by minors. A welcome addition to my collection!
