About this product

Product Information

In the days before home video, when access to anything but first-run Hollywood movies was limited to repertory houses and college film societies, Hal Ashby's HAROLD AND MAUDE achieved cult status and became a surprise hit. In a broad sense, the film is a simple love story about how opposites attract--only, this time around, he's 19 and she's 79. Harold, played with deadpan humor by Bud Cort (M*A*S*H), is under extreme pressure from his overbearing mother, Mrs. Chasen (Vivian Pickles, in a performance that is a sheer delight), to enter the dating world. Unfortunately, the shy and morose Harold would rather spend his time attending the funerals of complete strangers. It is at one of these where he meets Maude (Ruth Gordon), who has the spunk and energy of a teenager. Maude is convinced that Harold needs to come out of his shell and enjoy life, so she brings him into hers. The taboo relationship between Harold and Maude, created by screenwriter Colin Higgins, embodied the spirit of an experimental generation guided by the mantra "If it feels good, do it." The love affair between the film's two eccentrics remains one of Hollywood's most unexpected, but tender, romances. The soundtrack, with songs by Cat Stevens, provides an effective thematic bridge as Harold crosses from extended adolescence into manhood.

  • Love conquers all

One of the best wacky and funny love stories of it's time. Great characters, great story and one of the best sound tracks any movie can have by Cat Stevens. Ruth Gordon has one of the best part she ever played and Bud Cort has the demeanor down perfect for his character Harold. I recommend this movie to everyone, its one of my favorites.

  • An icon of liberation

Even today this movie might shock people. But, in reality, it is all about love, the redemption of a young man and building his capacity to go into adulthood with poise and equanimity. His mentor is a concentration camp survivor who had learned the value of love and joy not just occasionally but all the time. The spontaneity of her reactions to the simplest and most beautiful of events certainly contributed to the young man's maturation. It was a fun and happy movie with macabre twists that amused us immensely.

  • Cult Classic

Ruth Gordon is devilish in this movie. The premise, the character profiles, and the acting is simply great. When originally released, it was hardly noticed until much later and it finally caught the public's attention. About two weeks before Ruth Gordon's death she attend a showing of this movie with a group of Harold And Maude fans. Worthy addition to my DVD collection, one I will watch several times.

  • Harold And Maude- a man learns to live and love and suffer loss, all in one movie.

Perfect copy of Harold and Maude Ruth Gordon summered on Martha's Vineyard, and she shopped in our market, and was just as full of life in person as on screen. We watched this movie every summer above the town hall, and our sail boat was named Maude, and the dingy was Harold. This is a timeless movie, and now that I live in Santa Cruz, Ca., I daily drive by the bridge where they sat overlooking the boardwalk, and drive up Highway One where the Jag drove in the rain. So it's still a part of my life. Hope you like it as much as i do.

  • Great Acting

Yes, there are a few monumentally weird things that happen in this movie. But the acting is amazing. I didn't like the casting for Maude, personally. I couldn't stand her to be honest, with all of her overflowing predictable eccentricity. But Bud Cort's acting is thoroughly perfect, especially since movies these days leave you thirsting for a cerebral humorous performance from an actor. His mother in the movie is hilarious. The movie is FULL of subtle hilariousness, take note especially if you are used to being spoon-fed plot like so many movies do. For instance there is a scene where Harold is in his therapist's office, and the two of them are wearing the exact same suit, down to socks and tie. And then another where Harold's mother tells him to "eat his beets" at the dinner table, and he immediately starts gobbling them. Things like that. I was rolling laughing quite a few times. A very unusual film with many pricelessly funny moments.

  • Wonderful classic

Great cult classic film. Harold & Maude is a great dark comedy that has just the right blend of touching moments and laugh-out-loud bits. The performances are great, and this film is like a short time travel back to the early 1970's.

  • Dark Humor A "Cougar" In Rarest Form- 5 Star Cult Classic

One of the funniest, well written, dark humor, movies of all time. A young man obsessed with death and an 80 year old woman obsessed with life. They cross paths while attending funerals and the story ensues from there. A lot of tongue in cheek, laugh out loud moments. Set in the 1970's but might as well be current. The relationship between Gordon and Cort gives a new meaning to "Cougar". A must see and must have movie. If you love dark, dry humor this cult classic is one for your collection!

  • Heartwarming

Two kindred spirits find each other. Their relationship will open your eyes to the friendship that can evolve, if you concentrate on the quality of the relationship, and not just the societal parameters of gender, age and social status. It's a beautiful, fun film.
