This movie and The Red Violin are my all-time favorites. Great stories, music, character studies.

I rented the movie through Netflix last night and enjoyed the story as well as the music so much that I watched the credits to find out if a soundtrack was available. Often the story or the music stands out, but in this case the music is magnificent, the story is brilliant and the setting aboard an elegant cruise ship is stunning! The story is about a man born on a ship in the year 1900 and was abandoned when his immigrant parents arrived in America. He was raised by the crew and had a natural talent for piano. The "legend" is recounted by a trumpet player who was his friend. It is time well spent and listening to the music will remind me of a great film I will want to watch again.
The movie is hard to find at rental stores, but it's worth the search! We found this movie about nine years ago. Our children who are now 18 and 21 still enjoy it as much today as the grandmas in our family who saw it for the first time this (2009) summer. The story is about a man that was born on a cruise ship in 1900. Good story line, great music! I wore out my cd of the soundtrack and had to replace it. If you appreciate piano, jazz or just great music, this is a MUST HAVE! For some parents with young children: there are a few "rough" words in the beginning, but after that it's fine.
This is a beautiful piece of music . . . .

This is one of the most wonderful movies I have ever seen so I had to have to the DVD & the CD Soundtrack. Listening to the beautiful music made me remember the scene in the movie. But when I listed to the Soundtrack, then I have to watch the movie again. The song at the end is what makes me cry every time. I recommend the DVD AND the CD. It was wonderful.
I saw this movie on IFC and it grew on me. as did the music. After seeing it again recently, I decided to see if the CD might be for sale here. And it was. The CD is a nice blend of music made for the movie and music that is played in the movie. I wish it included the "only recording made of 1900", but the end song, sung by Roger Daltrey almost makes up for it.
The movie and soundtrack outshine many other great movies. It was well written and the music speaks and tells the story just by itself, it has so much emotion. Well recommended for any classical music lovers and piano lovers, or just lovers of movies.
I bought this album after watching the movie. I love the music Ennio Morricone is brilliant! The only thing which would have made the album perfect would be to include the piano duel. Great film, great music, great album.
