Product Information

Director Burt Kennedy's Western is a bawdy, all-out parody that skewers every cliché the genre has to offer. There's Jason McCullough (James Garner), the sharpshooting stranger passing through town who becomes sheriff; the Danbys, a villainous gang who terrorizes the entire community; Prudy Perkins (Joan Hackett), the lily white maiden who wants to marry the sheriff; and the local drunk (the great Jack Elam) whom McCullough appoints as his deputy. Although McCullough manages to arrest Joe Danby (Bruce Dern), the rest of the Danby gang is set on busting him out of prison. Garner is utterly charming as the earnest hero of this entertaining tale, cool and calm as a cucumber; don't miss the scene in which he first imprisons Joe Danby in a cell without bars.

    Good western with comedic twists. Entire cast is jam-packed with many Film western stars.

    Good fun! Clean movie, clever plot points and great characters. James Garner is perfect in the role of master flimflam man. Jack Elam is great in a rare comedic role as an old gunslinger. The camera LOVES Joan Hackett in her strong female role AND she is intoxicating to watch and admire.

    Wonderfully charming, sweet, clean movie!

    I love this movie. There is such warmth and charm and quirkiness in the characters. The casting was great. The story line is amusing and fun and engaging. You love even the bad guys. James Garner is so handsome and sexy in the "man's man" way of taking charge and being so smart and wise and capable and skilled and, well, just everything a girl would fall in love with in a man! It's just a clean, sweet, charming movie. Love it! Or James Garner......not sure which! Haha!

    Great western comedy with all star cast

    The movie is a classic James Garner western drama/comedy with a great cast. Many of the same actors and characters from the Support Your Local Gunfighter are also in this movie but it has a different plot and I liked the story better. The DVD itself was in great condition actually better than expected.

    Reallllly Fun Entertainment!!!

    A couple of friends recommended this movie, not by the words they spoke, but by the looks and smiles they gave each other when mentioning it. They were right! It's crazy and fun, combining the elements of humor, love (in a unique way), and slapstick together in a totally entertaining fashion. If you have a sense of humor, you'll thoroughly enjoy this movie. I didn't comment on whether or not it is a good value. I don't remember what I paid for it but it must have been a good value or I wouldn't have purchased it!!

    They don't make them like this anymore.

    This is one of the cleverest movies ever made, and it's a great comedy parody on all the Western movies. James Garner plays a guy for whom everything just seems to go right. The supporting cast is great too. Our whole family loves it, and we often quote lines from it to one another: "You just make me tired all over when you talk like that." Wish they still made movies this wholesome and entertaining.

    "Clean enough for children to watch."

    This movie's cast are some of my favorite western actors and the movie was well cast. It had a good plot and it definitely proved that good wins over bad. While it was hysterically funny, this only proves that fowl language is not necessary in order to put together a great movie and it should send a message to our present directors and producers. Even though the movie did have a "cat house" in it, that part was brief and I believe most parents would allow their children to watch it. Now, when I get bored or down in the dumps, I watch this movie and it always lifts my spirits and leaves me wondering if the Sheriff ever got to Australia. LOL I am giving it a 5-star rating for good casting and a great story.
