After his wife's death, an alcoholic father, who once lived a gypsylike existence as part of a people known as the travellers, retires with his two sons to a dreary Dublin tenement. But the atmosphere brightens considerably when the children's grandfather, who remains a traveller and does not approve of their city life, brings them a white stallion named Tir na nOg whom he has found near the Irish Sea. For a while, they all live happily in the flat, but when annoyed neighbors complain about the presence of a horse in an apartment building, police intervene and take Tir na nOg away. When an unethical cop illegally sells the stallion to a breeder who plans to train him as a racehorse, the boys, desperate to get him back, come to the animal's rescue and free him. Tir na nOg then leads the children on an adventure through the Irish countryside, as their father, helped by some friends, tries to track them down. When the family is finally reunited, a magical event occurs that makes them realize the mystical powers that the animal possesses.Product Identifiers

Into The West - Into Imagination
Jim Sheridan’s (The Boxer) semi-realist story of a single father (Gabriel Byrne)struggling with grief and a drinking weakness - while raising his two young lads in suburban Dublin, is brought to vivid life in this curious - but impressive examination of life amongst the Irish gypsy set. Byrne was so impressed with Sheridan’s script, he also signed on as co-producer for this contemporary classic – involving a mysterious white horse that features in several rather astounding scenes (including one inside a cinema!) Mike Newell directs with confidence and Patrick Doyle’s haunting score lifts many scenes, while Newton Thomas Sigel’s (‘The Usual Suspects’) superb cinematography soars with visual splendor. A film nobody has heard of
I had a friend I really wanted to share this with, and we looked everywhere on line for a streaming or PPV version. The price here was quite reasonable; the best deal I found elsewhere was nearly twice the price. Very satisfied with the quality of the film as far as sharpness of the picture, especially considering when it was made. It's a charming story, full of Celtic atmosphere and mythology. The 2 young boys carry the film; I don't know if they have appeared in other movies, but by all rights they should've. The rest of the cast is also excellent. It's rated PG, maybe for some cursing and mild violence, but I wouldn't have an issue letting a child of any age watch it.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned
