About this product

Product Information

If one could sum up soul-stirring, a complete masterpiece, unpretentious courage, and classic at its unique nature in two words, then 'The Mission' would be it. This movie depicts a setting of the 1750s and features father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons), a Spanish Jesuit priest, who travels to western northeastern Argentina and the Paraguayan jungle to construct a mission station in a challenging attempt to convert a Guarani community to Christianity. Rodrigo Mendoza (Robert DeNiro) also features as a mercenary, who makes his money by kidnapping natives and selling them to plantations such as the plantations of the Spanish Governor, Don Cabeza (Chuck Low). Witness how the mercenary and the priest join hands to shield a South American tribe from brutal suppression by the uprising 18th-century colonial empires.

  • Powerful depiction of clash of faith and reality

The cast is excellent, the story compelling and multi-layered, and the movie is a sleeper. A revealing look at colonial era slave trade in South America, and at the church struggling to be a voice of justice, but having to a servant to the state. Individual beliefs are set against greater powers, and the tragic results that those individuals submit to as a matter of faith. My favorite scene is the wordless expression of grace in a journey through the jungle with an immense pack of sinfulness loaded onto DeNiro. The cinematography is excellent, beautiful scenes against the ugliness of what Europeans are doing, and how the missionaries try to create islands of faithfulness amid a sinful and sinister game playing out around them. It was created in the 1980s, a time when the church in Central and South America was struggling with some of the same issues. The extra DVD about the production is interesting in providing background, but just the movie is worth the DVD cost of about $10. In a time of streaming, the DVD allows portability into settings without wifi access. I use it with church groups and in a ministry inside a prison.

  • Technicolor Genocide

The movie is cinematically stunning. DeNiro and Irons portray their characters powerfully. The story is as compelling as it is tragic. You could watch this after viewing the documentary "Exterminate All The Brutes" to get an historically accurate and disheartening insight into the horrors of European colonial genocide.

  • Great film on quality DVD

This is one of the greatest films ever made… offered to at a discount price on a quality DVD. My explanation: movies fashion! Nowadays people like films with explicit violence, crashed cars and machine-gun shots!

  • Excellent true story about Spanish/Portuguese settlement of the Americas

Great true story filmed in the most splendid of scenery. Acting was great and real native Indians used in the movie made it even more authentic.

  • The power of forgiveness...

A glimpse of the realities facing early missionaries in the jungles of South America. A flagrant abuse of tribal peoples by the political forces of the day that even infiltrated the church.

  • Provocative movie. Glad to see again after over thirty years from first viewing.

I remember being greatly moved when I first saw in the 1980s. It was wonderful to enjoy in 2021. The message is thought provoking.
