Andromeda is what you would expect of syndicated Sci-Fi. Which means if you like it, you will like it. If you don't, well, there are worst ways to spend an idle Sunday afternoon. Season 1 has all the rough edges you would expect of a brand new, low end series. However, the writing is sound, the special effects are not distracting, and there is promise for it to get better. Unfortunately, after the first season, even though the individual episodes get slicker, the whole epic, unavoidable destiny, plot mechanic kicks in. Which, though most people seem to like, I find a tad tiersome and lazy. All in all, the first season is definitely worth checking out, especially if you have any Sci-Fi leanings. The fact that this season is so hard to find makes watching it all that more enjoyable.
I bought this set because I had just finished watching the first season of another posthumous Gene Roddenberry production (Earth Final Conflict), which I really enjoyed. Although the Andromeda episodes are all at least somewhat entertaining, they are hard to take seriously. The demographic they were going after seems to children or young teenagers. The aliens look ridiculous. One of the characters looks completely human except for purple skin and a tail, and another appears to be in a bad combination of a gorilla/werewolf Halloween costume. There are also a lot anachronisms for a series that is supposed to take place centuries in the future, such as fuzzy dice hanging in front of the "driver's seat" of one of the space ships. The original idea from Gene Roddenberry had a lot of potential but the execution was poor in my opinion. My advice for most Roddenberry fans is to complete your collection of Star Trek DVDs instead of buying this collection, though if you don't mind the silliness, you may enjoy this show.Read full review
I watched many of the episodes while it was on tv, but I did not start at the very beginning. Dylan Hunt is "awakened" after being suspended for 303 years, and he now wants to restore the Commonwealth which no longer exists. He begins his journey with a crew which originally wanted to salvage his ship. The concept seems a bit farfetched, but as the show progresses he is able to influence peoples to his cause. I'm a Kevin Sorbo fan! Also, ladies, once you see Keith Hamilton Cobb, you will be hooked to the series! :) I am a sci-fi, fantasy adventure nut, so I am enjoying getting to know the crew from the very beginning. I very much recommend this series to anyone!
If you like science fiction then this is a must see for you .Its action packed and many times the story will suprise you taking unexpected twists and turns. If you have seen the series of Firefly , Farscape or Stargate then you should also watch this series .It is alot more dark and gritty then what I was expected from the creator of Star Trek Star Trek. I was unable to watch the first 2 seasons of Andromeda on netflix but after seeing the reviews I decided to buy the first 2 seasons off of ebay and was very happy I did so.
Apparently this idea sat on the shelf for many years. Gene Roddenbury died years ago. A spaceship Captain is caught in orbit around a Black Hole and three centuries pass. The Commonwealth (a group of thousands of planet in several galaxies) government during that time. He first must stop people from salvaging his ship and then plan a method to restore the Commonwealth. He has a long journey ahead of him. Kevin Sorbo is the perfect hero.
