Why airplanes stall How do you know you're about to stall? The landing approach. How the pilot's eye functions in judging the approach. The visual clues by which an experienced pilot unconsciously judges: how you can quickly learn to use them. "The Spot that does not move." This is the first statement of this phenomenon. A foolproof method of making a landing approach across pole lines and trees. The elevator and the throttle. One controls the speed, the other controls climb and descent. Which is which? The paradox of the glide. By pointing the nose down less steeply, you descend more steeply. By pointing the nose down more steeply, you can glide further. What's the rudder for? The rudder does NOT turn the airplane the way a boat's rudder turns the boat. Then what does it do? How a turn is flown. The role of ailerons, rudder, and elevator in making a turn. The landing--how it's made. The visual clues that tell you where the ground is. The "tail-dragger" landing gear and what's tricky about it. A strong advocacy of the tricycle gear written at a time when almost all civil airplanes were taildraggers. Why the airplane doesn't feel the wind. Why the airplane usually flies a little sidewise. Plus: a chapter on Air Accidents by Leighton Collins, founder and editor of AIR FACTS. This is the book that teaches you how an airplane flies.
This is the book that teaches you how an airplane flies. It was written back around WWII era by an educator and flight instructor. The prose is a little dated and repetitive but the theory and practical lessons in the book are without question the most comprehensive discussion on flight theory and practice you'll find under one cover. I had a copy of this book 40 yrs ago when I first started flying. Now that I'm getting back in to flying all these years later I bought another copy as my refresher course.

I get it. Any airman is 6 degrees away from a stall at any time but geez! Stall stall ya do ya stall yer stalling.....good grief. Too much old old, did I say old prose? If you can stay awake and don’t stall, it’s ok.

Worth the read, needs studying
Somewhat out of date referring mostly to taildraggers. But as a wannabe pilot I found it killed lots of myths. I will have to read it at least one more and probably several more time for it all to make sense.

Become a better pilot, read this book
Written in 1944, a time when computers, electronics and GPS were unknown, this book is filled with straight forward advice on how a pilot should fly his plane without having to rely on electronics. Just the chapter on landing is worth the price. Page after page has all these little tricks you can use to become a safer and better flyer. I bought the book because and article in EAA's Sport Pilot magazine recommended it.
