Excellent recording, the selection of material for the CD is broad and very well done, recorded live at Small's Paradise, New York, starting with "Dark Eyes" mostly featuring Lou Donaldson on Alto Sax, Jimmy Smith adding his input about halfway through the number, moving on to "Groovin at Small's" a nice improvisation by all band members, after the number has finished, Babs Gonzales says a few words and introduces the band members Jimmy Smith, Lou Donaldson, Tina Brooks and Eddie McFadden, then announces the next number to be performed by the Trio as "An Insane Night in Small's Paradise" although the Track on the CD states it's "A Night in Tunisia", the band moves up a gear on this track, and manages an impressive 17 minutes of brilliant jazz improvisation. "Cool Blues" follows which is done at much the same pace as the previous number, well performed and crisply played. The next number is "What's New" and is performed at a much slower pace, probably to allow the band some recovery time, before moving on to another number "Small's Minor" featuring Eddie McFadden on Guitar, I myself liked the excellent drum playing by Donald Bailey, who wasn't playing on tracks 1 & 2, this track also features Jimmy Smith at his best, demonstrating this outstanding and amazing keyboard virtuosity, pure joy, my favourite track on this CD, which to the disgrace of the audience present only attracted a lacklustre response of applause, shame on them. Moving down a gear to the last number "Once in a While" with Tina Brooks doing a great solo on Tenor Sax, then Jimmy Smith finishes off the number, by pulling all the stops out on his Hammond, as if to say, wake up, it's time to leave, after the rather rude response to his last number.Read full review
