I have watched this a few times in the past and enjoyed it, but decided to try out the 3D version. Like most animated movies it makes reasonable use of 3D, but it does feel like 3D was added on rather than made with 3D in mind. Most of the usage is not the flashy `things flying towards the viewed', but is about adding depth to images by using 3D for the background, which is good - there just simply isn't enough use of the 3D feature in many scenes where it could have made a difference. The final action sequence in particular would have been far better with the arms of the boxtroll-collecting machine swinging around in 3D. As a movie, it is very much a European production so the humour isn't as simplistic as the Disney/DreamWorks offerings. The characters are portrayed quite well, the artwork isn't quite up to modern standards but has a nice "hand-drawn" look rather than overly-polished like recent Pixar offerings, and the selection of cheeses is jolly decent too.
