  • Acclaim soccer game, probably not great, right?

Well, I bought this one since I had "new" copy I didn't want to open so got a disc only because I wanted to try it out. So the game uses 2D sprites which I'm cool with since that is a strength of the Saturn. The graphics are definitely a mid 90s game. I haven't played it for more than a few minutes but here are my impressions. Good is that it seems to run at a nice smooth frame rate and the graphics and audio that are there aren't too bad. Bad list is a little longer. The ball "physics" are laughable. The ball comes off the foot of the player at a million miles an hour than just sort of plops and dies. It really is silly. The game play is seriously quick. The ball just bounces around frenetically and you cannot maintain possession for more than 1 second. There isn't a whole lot of audio or commentary. Finally, there isn't much fanfare when you finally score a goal, just a quick waving banner saying "GOAL" and the announcer screaming goal in a fairly unconvincing way. I didn't score many goals but it looks like the exact same sequence every single time. Conclusion: It's one of a whole bunch titles published by Acclaim on the Saturn that typically are average to bad. This one is just like that: average to bad. I will play it some more to see if it grows on me but it looks like a game that the publisher told the developer. "Yep, that's good enough, ship it.".
