Moore stars as Mary Richards, a talented and likable 30-something who is nonetheless stuck with a less-than-ideal life. After leaving her fiancé and moving to Minneapolis to be with her friend Phyllis, Mary takes a job as associate producer at a mediocre news program. Her work environment includes her boss, Lou Grant, a gruff editor with a heart of gold; Ted Baxter (Ted Knight), the narcissistic anchorman; and Sue Ann Nivens (Betty White), the man-crazy host of THE HAPPY HOMEMAKER and Mary's foil. Mary's apartment plays host to visitors such as liberal homebody Rhoda, the soft-spoken Georgette, and Phyllis, who feuds with Rhoda constantly. The legendary first episode sets the scene, with Mary permanently severing ties with her boyfriend Bill; finding herself in an absurd work situation where she struggles to get her overworked employer to give her something to do; and a drunk Lou making amends with Mary at her home.
