SynopsisKnown for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of -- and in the words of -- America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, working poor, and immigrant laborers. This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more., "It's a wonderful, splendid book-a book that should be read by every American, student or otherwise, who wants to understand his country, its true history, and its hope for the future." -Howard Fast, author of Spartacus and The Immigrants "[It] should be required reading." -Eric Foner, New York Times Book Review Library Journal calls Howard Zinn's iconic A People's History of the United States "a brilliant and moving history of the American people from the point of view of those…whose plight has been largely omitted from most histories." Packed with vivid details and telling quotations, Zinn's award-winning classic continues to revolutionize the way American history is taught and remembered. Frequent appearances in popular media such as The Sopranos, The Simpsons, Good Will Hunting, and the History Channel documentary The People Speak testify to Zinn's ability to bridge the generation gap with enduring insights into the birth, development, and destiny of the nation., With a new introduction by Anthony Arnove, this edition of the classic national bestseller chronicles American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official narrative taught in schools--with its emphasis on great men in high places--to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of--and in the words of --America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers. As historian Howard Zinn shows, many of our country's greatest battles--the fights for a fair wage, an eight-hour workday, child-labor laws, health and safety standards, universal suffrage, women's rights, racial equality--were carried out at the grassroots level, against bloody resistance.

    People's History of US

One must already know historical facts. And be aware that Zinn has definite views, especially on imperialism. He is not a fan of statesmen. He is an advocate for people: indigenous, migrants, women, etc. His books are to be studied while being read. One may disagree with some assertions he makes, but one will think about those assertions.

    An interesting read.

A few jarring typo's but the price was right and the story line has points to make you really think! My first downloaded book.

  • Scar

History is in the eye of the victor and much of the history of the US and the Western Hemisphere is written with sensitive middle schoolers in mind. This book puts much of this history in a broader perspective, one that includes a more extensive and diversified look at what shaped this nation. It is not exactly tearing the scab off of the wound, but it is at least looking at why the scar is shaped the way it is.

  • MUST-READ...!!! LEARN THE TRUTH ABOUT HOW AND WHY WE GOT WHERE WE ARE TODAY...!!!

This book gives you the complete details of how our country developed. If you've relied on your Public School History and Social Studies/Civics classes for your knowledge of United States development, then it's about time that you read this book. This is my second time reading it, inspired by the current times.

  • Mind blowing

This book completely changed my world view, and therefore my life, not because every word is gospel but because it causes you to question everything you have ever been told. I, like most people was taught history as told by the victors, and never thought about my place as a working class citizen. This book allows you to see domestic and foreign policy from the point of view of the poor and working class, which, if your reading this is probably you.
