When I read this book for the first time it took two years because it was so creepy/scary. I would check it out of the library; read a little bit, get scared, and take it back to the library, vowing never to touch it again. Then I would start wondering about the characters: what were they doing, what was going to happen next etc, so I would check the book out again, read a little bit, get scared, take it back to the library, vowing never to touch it again. And so it went until I was finally finished reading it and completely hooked on this great story about the demons (both real and imagined) that we all face, both as children and as adults. A book loaded with atmosphere and very visual, the reader is transported almost imediately to a place that could be small town anywhere, where children play and monsters are real and only the children are pure enough to see, and believe, and fight back. The only unfortunate thing about this (and all but one) Stephen King story is that he tends to use a lot more foul language than is necessary, but a person can read around foul language, and I would definately recommend this book to anyone who wants a great adventure that will keep the reader turning the pages, and is apt to lead to reading other works by this author. I also consider Stephen Kings work to be among my most valued teaching tools. I am a writer too, and Mr. Kings work has been instrumental in teaching me about dialogue, scene structure, voice, point of view, showing not telling etc.Read full review
Forget the movie, and forget anything else keeping you from sitting down for a great shiver! This is King at his best. As with so many of his writings, this one takes place in Derry, Maine. I must admit that is one town I don't even want to visit. Way too many very evil things have happened in that town. Beverly makes a very good point, when see says that people have just quit looking (feels much safer that way). King is a master at words and imagery. While reading this book, I found myself seeing what I was reading. Now I love a good horror story, but this one I had to put down every once in a while, get a breath of fresh air, and quit looking over my shoulder. You know they say that movies are usually not as good as a book. They (whoever they are) must have been referring to this example. I haven't read this for a couple of years. Let me tell you, just writing this review has brought up a whole lot of memories, and I really must pack my bags and get ready for another trip to that God-Forsaken town! I have no doubt you will enjoy your visit there, as much as I did.Read full review
I've been reading Stephen King for years, and this was one of the first that really creeped me out. If you're looking for a good scare this is a great choice for the beginner King. This is King at his finest ghoul-wise. Pennywise is a such a deliciously creepy invention, the pure evil in the guise of a child-friendly clown. The character development is another of King's great marks of greatness, and this is no exception even with a full seven heroes to flesh out. Dont' let anyone tell you to watch the movie instead, the movie is just a show for those who have read the book. You honestly dont' get anything from the movie like you would in the book so go here first. It's nice and long and keeps you at the edge of your seat many a time. A terrific book and a real classic. dont' just take it out of the library, make sure you buy it!Read full review
The movie was quite scary when I first saw the clown that was taking the children from Derry. Even in the end it was even scarier when I saw what was really behind the clown. It by Stephen King was published in 1986. The book opens open in the year 1957. George Denbrough is killed by Pennywise the Clown when George is out sailing his boat that his brother Bill Denbrough help him to make out of newspaper then sealed it with paraffin wax to protect the boat. Between the years 1957 up till 1985 there are numerous murders that are continuing to go on in the little town of Derry. In 1985, Mike Hanlon makes a call to the rest of the members that were in the "Losers Club" as the called themselves in 1958. Stan Uris is the first one to receive the call. He can't bring himself to go back to Derry even though they made a pact to return if the evil wasn't over in Derry. He commits suicide and scrawls the single word IT in blood on the bathroom wall. Richard Tozier now a disc jockey, Ben Hanscom now an architect, Eddie Kaspbrak now drives limousines for the rich in New York, Beverly Rogan(Marsh)(married) now a dress designer, and Bill Denbrough(married) now a famous writer are all called. The five of them agree to return to Derry to finish what they started in 1958. Mike Hanlon has never left Derry. These seven grown adults formed the losers club in 1958 when they were kids. Henry Bowers, Victor Criss, and Belch Huggins were the bullies in those days. If kids were not like them, they didn't belong and were often picked on and beaten up by these three. All seven members of the losers club have strange dreams and visions of Pennywise the clown. They thought they had killed the clown in 1958 but they were so wrong. Now as grown adults they are returning to Derry to face their worst nightmare again to finish it once and for all. The most gripping and terrifying novel to be written by Stephen King yet. It will keep you on the edge of your seat with every turn of the page. You will find yourself engrossed in the book and will lose all sense of time as you read this book. I found that I couldn't put the book down once I started reading. I would read late into the night and early morning hours to reach the end of the book. You must buy this book if it is available through ebay. I am pleased that I was able to purchase this book off of ebay and have it in my huge collection of Stephen King novels.Read full review

I read this book in college and dreamed about it, scared my room-mate out of his wits when I woke up screaming about something under the bed. The characters are so unique and the little events that King comes up with that reach down deep and touch you like no author can. This is my favorite King book because it has so many stories within a story. I remember the clown, prison guard, and the doberman pincher among other things. I would recommend it to anyone that wants a good read and a good scare. Its hard to put down once you get involved.
Words can’t really express the joy of having such an awesome piece of literature that has been your favorite work of fiction for years. Only a true bookworm will understand. Thank you again!

This book is one of King's best, and it takes you back to your childhood where adventure was around every corner, when you were playing! Only adventure and danger are TRULY around the corner with this group of kids in a small town! A very strange and intimidating clown keeps showing up, so the kids resolve to do what they can to rid the town of this creature! The book appears to be a VERY LARGE, or long story, but you will be surprised how fast the words fly by as you read and get more into the story, then suddenly it's over and the LARGE book now seems too small! Great story and one you don't want to miss...you may want to read it twice...I know I did!
I am the biggest Stephen King fan I have all his movies and my favorite is the movie "IT" I love pennywise!! I bought the costume so I decided that I needed to read the book, so far so good, I wish they would have put more of the book storyline in the movie ut then again the movie was 2 parts. The 1st part of the movie was great but the second was ok and the ending with the spider??? wtf was that it was bad but I love the movie lets see how the remake will turn out. Its sad that Jonathan, the childhood star took his life many years ago, I'm sure he would have been in the remake he was truly a remarkable actor in many known films. Hope the cast does a good job. Best book ever!!!!
The item came in a timely manner and was what was advertised. I am happy with my purchase. I have read this book already but wanted a hardcover for my collection.
