Align the point on the spot you wish to punch and press on the punch with your hand, and automatically centre punch triggers and leaves a nice punch mark, every time, all without having to use a hammer. The issue with the hammer type is the hammer blow much be significant enough for that style of punch to work. This is a very good center punch which replaces my “not so good quality one”. The tip is super hard and laves a very nice even indent even on stainless steel and other hard metal without becoming blunt, the action on this punch is precise and snappy, I have had no miss fires compared to my “replica” Chinese one that would miss fire every second punch. The large plastic “mushroom” dome is very comfortable to use and does not dig in to your palm. Very happy – very good tool that will last a life time, also made in Japan.
