Crisp, clear illustrations arranged in a no-nonsense fashion and organized in an intuitive way that provides for (1) easy comparison of similar stems of any given manufacturer and (2) quickly leafing through the stems of different manufacturers. While it is not comprehensive (nor does it pretend to be) it accurately and precisely illustrates a vast number of 20th century elegant glass stems likely to be encountered by the collector, dealer, or casual buyer. The book does not cover Early American Pressed Glass (EAPG) patterns, except for a few patterns of companies that also produced glass well into the 20th century. Nor does it present Depression glass patterns. By restricting itself to the 4000 or so patterns shown, the book remains manageable and wieldy. For the enthusiast who wants to know about stems of many different manufacturers, I can say without hyperbole that this book is nearly indispensable as a first resort for identification and comparison, especially for those stems of somewhat newer vintage. The one improvement I'd recommend? Scale. Many of the illustrations appear to be shown to the same scale, although probably not all of them. Some opening words on how to interpret the scale of the drawings might have been helpful, especially for some of the very similar and confusing stems. Some of this is alleviated by the authors' choice to always illustrate goblets, which aids greatly in comparison. While our collection is a specialty one emphasizing mostly one manufacturer, this book will become another key resource for identifying the many odd pieces that come along with adding those of our primary interest. Highly recommended.Read full review
I needed a book for my reference library on identifying crystal stemware. This book from Replacements, Ltd covers more than 4,000 patterns and is an excellent resource. Many glass manufacturers and importers are represented. Depression glass patterns are not shown. The book is layed out in Alphabetical order by manufacturer and cover 3 large manufacturers, Cambridge, Fostoria and Heisey. Many other manufacturers are represented along with unknown manufacturers. Pictures are all black and white so that patterns can be seen easily. This is an comprehensive guide of 372 pages showing stems and line shapes and is easy to use. Names and manufacturers are given to all known glassware. Manufacturers that mark their wares are also shown.
Buying the books that I have lately are for the purpose of collecting & identifying crystal, china & potteries. This particular book was absolutely imperative to have to identify crystal stemware. Its the best known & most descriptive book of its kind. Come to find out the 2 pieces were unidentifiable. There are STILL some of THOSE out there in this day & age. I just wish more of the books showed things in more color & up closer to make identification easier. Hard on the eyes when its in black & white & scambled or off in a distance. Thats my only dislike about a lot of the books & this one in particular. I understand why of course, because of the cost, but it would be much easier to use if it were closer up identifications. Overall, this was & always will be, a PERFECTIONIST book.
I DEAL IN THE SALE OF FINE CRYSTAL AND HAVE FOUND THIS ID GUIDE INDESPENSIBLE FOR BEING SURE OFTHE ID OF STEMWARE... I HEARTILY RECOMMEND IT!!

Only one complaint. By organizing the book by maker, it's very hard to use as an identification guide when you don't know who made the piece you want to identify.

Once again Bob Page and Dale Fredriksen have unraveled a maze of Crystal Stemware patterns. I have learned to expect perfection when I purchase one of the pattern identification reference books that these two experts have written. As with all their books this is the best in pictures and drawings of Crystal stemware. This book will help you find a pattern name and manufacture to that beautiful stemware your Mom or Grandmother gave you. This is a book to add to your collection if you buy, sell or just want to know about crystal stemware.
